Where to get new key/s

I just bought a 99 996 coupe and the guy only had one key. Would like to get at least a valet key or a factory key fob. Does anyone know where I can get one cut other than the dealer?

Approx. Cost?

Thanks.

I would suggest the dealer to avoid any problems. It needs programming anyway.

I got a full remote key for about $266 + tax + half hr labor for programming @ $47.25
Pretty ridiculous, if you ask me!

+1 to get it at the dealer. a friend had bought one off of ebay, and they had issues with the programming.

we had to purchase a 2nd key fob for our 99 996 as well. as CosmosC4S mentioned, the price he gave you is pretty darn close to the price i paid as well.

The programming is just the immobilizer and alignment right? Meaning if you add a key, you have to set it for 2 keys and make sure the immobilizer works as well. Will call the dealer and see what the charge for it. I can do all this with the VW's, but do not have the Porsche software to program them...i guess dealer will make some money...

Also make sure both keys work with your memory seats(if you have them). This is an extra step in the programming.

AHAA...that is one specific area that Porsche technicians need special training in! Most of them just can't get it right!!??
Long story short, my new key sends seat memory wonkers, and dealership tells me my memory module under the seat is bad, $1000 plus labor, BUT...NO Guarantee that will fix it!!! However, my old key works the memory fine, Oh, isn't the memory module supposed to be bad??? Oh Well....I didn't fall for that $1000 scam.

It is amazing what dealer tech's do not know sometimes. Wish they still have good training programs like the techs in Germany. Like years of training before they are allowed to touch a customer car...
