Somebody backed into the side of my Targa
Somebody backed into the side of my Targa
As soon as the police find the person, I'm sure their insurance company will pay for the repair.
My question -- advice I'm seeking -- is how to get compensated for the diminished value of a formerly pristine 12K mile 2003 Targa?
Do I need a lawyer to negotiate it? How can I determine the value by which the car is diminished? It's a fender-bender but nonetheless it's going to require bodywork.
Any smart advice would be appreciated -- thanks!

Just be sure to tell your insurance to do a diminished value report (i think that is the term) and to include that value in the damages. Likely no need for a lawyer. Pretty SOP for insurance companies.
Well... SOP when you make sure they do it... if you don't ask they usually don't do it.

There has been a lot of discussion of diminished value over on Rennlist. Apparently some insurance companies will fight it.
No need for a lawyer - just keep pushing, they'll cave eventually.

The diminished value on a 5 year old car if properly fixed would not be worth the expense of an attorney and the time and aggravation to pursue the insurance would only add more hurt --even if you win. I understand that a low mileage well kept car gives an emotional attachmemt . You can fight it , or you can let it go , get it fixed and move on .
Just to share a personal experience . In 2003 someone tore apart my entire front end of my 996 just to steal my xenon lights . I still got 55K in trade in at a dealership in 04 but I never forgot the ill feeling I got when I saw two big holes and the hood torn apart .
My advice is to give it time and hopefully you'll come to a better understanding of what you are feeling right now. Regardless .. I wish you the best.

I was at a CVS the other day and a girl came rushing in to the store looking for the owner of a car that she backed into. I actually thanked her for being honest, since it's the exception and not the rule anymore.
On more than one occasion I've seen someone back into another car and leave. Every time I jotted their license plate down and left it on the victims windshield. I hate that sh*t.

Thanks for all the input
So the police haven't found the person. The haircut shop where the person who smashed into my car was parked, gave the police a list of 5 or 6 people who left between when I got there and when I found the damage.
The police did an admirable job of chasing down each person. There were white paint transfers on my car but none of the 5 or 6 people drove a white car. Police are going to keep looking but probably outta luck.
So now it's down to working it thru my insurance company with a $500 deductible.
FYI, there are a number of websites where you can pay for a diminished value estimate. Some states like Georgia require compensation for it, but others don't. I'm waiting to talk to the claims adjuster to determine whether to pursue it.
Hopefully there's a special place in hell for people bash other people's Porsches and take-off without giving it another thought. . .

Many of us have been there before. Just get it fixed asap. That's your only hope of "getting over it." Every day that you have to stare at the damage will scar you even more.
