headlight bulb upgrade and install

my driver side low beam headlight is out. i searched the forums but couldnt really find many recommendations on a good replacement bulb. i am looking to upgrade the bulbs in both headlights. what would be a good choice for this?

also, is it true that you have to remove the entire headlight housing to replace the bulb? wouldnt surprise me, why make it simple, i mean, you should have to take a day off of work to change a bulb right?

thanks guys

oh, its a 99 c4

actually, removing the entire headlamp is quite simple. In your tool kit you have a special wrench that fits into a socket covered by a rubber plug on both sides of your trunk. Place the tool in and give it a quarter turn forward and the headlight assembly will be loose enough to pull out. It honestly takes longer to take move the trunk liner and remove the plug than it takes to get the light out. There is also a posting on Youtube which shows removal and reinstallation.

Hope this helps!

You need H7 halogen or DS2 Xenon if you have Litronics. Do a search here for more info on replacement options.

Check out Sylvania SilverStars for any of your Halogen H7's - avail at PepBoys

I just upgraded my litronics to Philips 6000k Ultinon DS2, it was a huge improvement in light quality and vision over my aged OEM bulbs.

I just upgraded a H7 4300k 55W Xenon retrofit bought from VVME. huge light improvement and no glare against oncoming traffic due to good cutoff already in the halogen reflectors.

You can get a xenon retrofit kit cheap too now....I even think there was a group buy on them on this forum.

It is actually pretty easy to change bulbs compared to most front engine cars.

headlight swap is easy on the 996, 997 etc. Much easier than taking the entire front end off an Evo to do it!

The Porsche models dont like high powered halogen bulbs so go with a good HID kit, H7 35w will suffice. D2R based H7 capsules if you can find them for a better job at cutting down glare (the bulb is shielded itself) and for throwing a more direct light on the ground with less scatter.

I replaced both low beam bulbs on my 200C4 with Sylvania's Silverstar Ultra H7Su2's. I'm vary pleased with their additional light output and the fact that the light is noticably whiter than OE. About $40 for the pair @ AutoZone.
