18" v. 19"
18" v. 19"
Distracted last message. Can one install 18" wheels in front and 19" wheels at the rear (like Corvette) without dangerous results, on a 997?
I will buy a 2005 Cab, I enjoy DE, I think I'll order all 18" wheels, suggestions.

please don't do that on your car. it's not designed to take them. sometimes i see that happens on some 360s i just don't know what to say. customer has the right not to know anything but the shop who sell that kinda package should be banned!

19's are not recommended for the 996. For wheel stability and feel, even the tuners recommend no bigger than 18's. Just my .02.

A good friend of mine is one of the Chief Mechanics for the Racer's Group. In a conversation we had, he mentioned this. Also if you read the latest edition of Excellence (Feb '05), the article about the 9ff "Clubsport" they said the same thing. 19's are just too much for this chassis. Not to mention the issue of unsprung weight and rotational mass. All play a key role in driving feel and performance. Now the new 997 compensates for this and the 19's were designed right in.
As for my background, I pretty much do most of my own work on my cars. Specific projects like body work and things like the RMS I leave to the experts. However, I try to be in tune with as much information on my cars as possible.
For example, I wrote this how-to fix an issue on my last car:
BMW M3 Oil pump issue fix
Again though...everything is up to personal taste. Some folks like 19's, some do not.
Cheers,
Chad
Most of the "tuned" turbos on this site are running 19s for the street with no issues, including me. Many, many 996s both C4s and regular Carrera are also running 19s with no issues. I venture to guess that just about every car in the recent "High Roller" shootout runs a set of 19s for daily use as well.
You commented that "even the tuners recommend no bigger than 18's." The tuners that I have dealt with actually run 19s on their personal cars.
18s are much better for the track, there is no doubt for the reasons you have already mentioned. On the street ... that is left to personal taste.
Nothing wrong with having a set of each ....
