Door speaker upgrade

What's the largest component speaker you can install in the 996 door without major modifications/cutting? 7"? 8"?

6.5" - no cutting?
7" - some trimming?
8" - major cutting?

I have alpine in the door and dash and rear seat

I have a 996 cabrio, I am trying to upgrade larger than stock also. I picked up a set of large bose speakers out of a turbo 996 to see if they fit but I think I will have to cut, which I do not want to do. The six alpine's sound good in the stock size and there are much better speakers than alpine out there, might be worth looking before cutting.

I'm probably not going with the stock 5" size, no matter how good the replacement speakers may be.

Has anyone installed 6.5", 7" or 8" speakers in the doors, and how much modification was necessary?

I would imaging that you will need to ditch the stock enclosures for sure.

Thanks!

You will have to ditch the enclosure if you go bigger, 6.5" shouldn't be an issue. I don't really see a reason to go larger than a 6.5 in that car I will say without the enclosure you need to build a plate that will seal to the door so the back waves from the speaker do not meet the front killing your midbass.

Sounds like good advice. Maybe a combination of MDF and Dynamat?

5" focal subs fit in the doors with almost no effort....anything larger requires cutting and most likely fiberglass work

I have been able to install a 6.5 in the pod with quite a bit of cutting. I could not fully press the interior door panel on the plastic fasteners because of the size. If I dremeled the grills it might allow full contact. I currently have Alpine F1 Status 5.5s which allow a flush fit. If you go larger, I think you will need to ditch the pods and go with a custom box.

I'm hoping to keep things as original looking as possible.. not necessary but i want a clean look and plenty of punch.. the larger the speakers the better. it seems 4 inch in the front and at best 5.25 in the rear and doors. anything more is going to cause problems.. like JomamaGT says a box may be the only cure.

It not about size... It's about quality... You need to buy Focals for best sound possible... 4" Focal sound much better than 6X9 Alpines... Now, if you just want loud noise I agree go with bigger speakers and a big amp
