996 NB with 20 inch wheels?
996 NB with 20 inch wheels?
Hey just bought a 2001 996 cab and wanted some feedback on 20 inch wheels and what offset and tire size should I run? I am thinking of buying some Vossen VVS084. Let me know what you think. Thanks!!!
20's look goofy on 996's, my car has the stock 17's chromed and they look fantastic and ride soft with the SUMITOMO HTR Z III's I just put on it. Amazing NO MORE tire noise, had PZERO's never again, they are SO LOUD.
Go with 19's to answer your question.

No you don't want 20's too big for a NB 996 plus too much unsprung weight for a 911. Most people use 18 or 19's, you can however go with a wider tire on the rear for an aggressive look and better handling. View the pics in my profile for reference to get an idea the wheels are wider than standard. Later I will step up to real carbon fiber 19' rims on my 2001 but that's it.
Listen the the wise folks, For a show only car, 20's are fine. If you wan a pleasurable driving experience than stick with 18's or 19's max. Post pics when you have made your decission.

You could go with a 19 with no lip like a p 40 or even a victor zehn, they tend to look larger to me w/o a lip. These are some wheels I have had in the past all 19's. Stock sport designs, MHT mantra with a 4 inch lip, Moda Md1's with a rear offset of 63 and a 7mm spacer on top of that. All of these wheels are now gone. Just some ideas, each wheel totally changed the look of the car.
Actually the Modas are for sale, third picture.

Increased unsprung weight seriously degrades every measure of performance from acceleration to braking and handling. I realize some people think larger wheels look good but you should sell the Porsche if this is something you are interested in doing to your car. You're just wasting the car and your money. It's interesting to see so many people advocating 19" wheels. The 996 suspension was specifically tuned for 18" wheels. In fact, the 997 suspension was completely reworked to accommodate the optional 19" wheels.

"18s are perfect fit as far as handling and filling the wheelwells.
"19 would be the largest acceptable size.
Wheels choices in these two sizes range from $1000. And it depends on your choice and needs.
If you could post a pic of your 996 cab we can start giving ideas.

Look at wheel dynamics website
They have some cars with 20's pictures. I like the look of a 19. 18's will give the same overall diameter as a 19 or even a 20. I do like the look of an 18 with a meaty tire on it. I just think 20's have tires that look like rubber bands since they are so stretched.

You would need at least a 20 series (315/20/20) sidewall for a 20" rear rim. They exist but are very hard to get. Probably very expensive too.
Having said that, if I could do it, I would! I love hot wheels sized wheels. Forgestar makes some reasonably light weight 20" rims too.
