2001 C4 repair advise needed
advise needed my 2001 c4 is sparingly used. the check engine light came on. took it to the dealership. the dealer says i need a new transmission (est @ $13,500) repairs to fix a front differential leak (est $4750).
other than regular service, i have had zero maintenance issues and don't know what to make to these estimates. any opinions on these costs/estimates? my original OEM nav system works sometime and doesn't at others. any recommendations on any after market navs that would fit in the dash?

For aftermarket NAV, basically any of the cool setups from the big brands, as long as they are for "Double DIN" installations.
I like the kenwood DNX9960.
DOn't know what to tell you about what the dealer is telling you...
But for close to 20K, heck, I think you could get a new motor installed for that much...
Did the dealer give any specifics as to why the light is on?

thanks i agree with your sentiment. the light is on due to fault code T0740 which apparently is a torque converter fault. apparently if left unattended, the engine could stall when the converter fails to maintain contact.
Definitely stay away from dealer. Why a new tranny when the code is for the torque converter? Two different parts.
Front diff leak $4700? what are they replacing the entire front end? Go somewhere else they are investing in too much lube to use on their customers....

I'd go to another shop. Porsche doesn't supply transmission part I heard. That's why dealer is saying you need a new transmission. A porsche specialist shop can probably fix it (instead of replacing the whole transmission). Find out what part of the transmission is needed. Maybe you can locate it on ebay. Junk yard is another source.

in response to djantlive's post - that is exactly what the dealership said - that porsche does not allow them to repair or refurbish trannies and that the parts required are not sold either. the good news the dealer's management has put in a request that porsche NA management take a look at the case. lets see what tomorrow brings. i am still going to get a second opinion. and also follow up on geetee's suggestion of looking in the philly area. thanks again.
