Charcoal Activated Cabin Air Filter...
I just replaced mine and went with the charcoal type. I had in my Volvo and yes they do make a difference the thing is you have to replace them regularly as the activated charcoal stops working afer a while.
makes a big difference...helps with smells, odors, and small particles that get through the normal filter, i always get mine from the dealer and its like 80 bucks but worth it...during polin season i dont lower my top or open my windows...
Had those in my Lexus & Cayenne replaced with the charcoal ones just recently. I did notice that the particular odor that characterized each interior is now gone. The interior smell is very neutral, as in zero odor. Got them thru ebay as replacement filters, not OEM. Both the same brand, something like TYC. Fits well and something like $15-$25, as I recall.

Charcoal filters are established in the HVAC industry for odor reduction. They have different formulations depending upon the odors that are supposed to be eliminated. So not all odors will be eliminated, but they do a very good job.
The general purpose ones do work, although if particularly inexpensive I would question the amount of activated carbon imbedded in the filter vs. a more expensive one. I doubt you'll be able to notice the weight difference between a carbon and non-carbon. If you do, that's a lot of carbon.
I'm familiar with the parent company of Micronair and they are known as making excellent filters in the HVAC industry. http://www.micronair.us/

Depends on the volume of air and the amount of carbon. Just guessing by the size of the cabin filters, whatever is the recommended change interval is probably all you can expect before the odor reducing properties are gone.
Not all carbon air filters and/or designs are created equal.
For example, my 3 series has a smaller filter with less pleats and overall surface area. It does not do as well of a job or last as long as my 5 series filters which probably have 3-4 times the overall surface area and is made of denser carbon materials.
Depending on the design, I don't think people should get their hopes up high and expect miracles.
In a Lexus or Maybach maybe, but not in a sports car...

You're right about the differences. In filtration, surface area certainly matters, but depth loading can make the difference as well in terms of dust holding capacity. Granulated carbon media density does too.
