My DD is a 2002 996 Cab. It sits outside, just outside the garage where my other porsche/wife's cars are parked. We had a torrential downpour the week before Tksgvg. I got in the car at 4:30 AM as usual, and halfway to work the lights went out, except for brights. The wipers quit. cabin lites..nada. AC no go. I pulled over and waited for daylight.
About three hours later I tried to start her up--uhuh. Towed and porsche and Insurance are now doing 6K worth of module and controller replacements. All driains stopped up wth tiny pin oak leaves. Additionally, first owner had put after market stereo in and the seal was spinning around the umbilical through the firewall. More water coming down under gas pedal and filling up rear sieat wells.

I bought ann exterior cover for the leaves.

so besides my ignition switch going out,a RMS failure or ims failure.Or total engine catastrophe now i gotta worry about leaves.
Does it worry you about the water damage long term?That stuff always seems to linger .

I've posted my experience about this. My car was plagued with water leaks both front and rear for several months while I was searching for answers. First, a foot of water appeared in my trunk ruining my amp. Cleared the leaves covering the front drains. This, in turn, revealed another issue (with 1999 models, at least, which I found out that Porsche released a TSB for) with water coming through the front firewall. Did the TSB which solved the front leaks. As for the rear leaks, there are drain hoses behind the rear speakers. Those hoses must be checked periodically. Mine were both cracked which caused water to enter the cabin from the rear. Now, after several rains, my car is all dry inside after doing what I had to do.

 

jr1966 - how do you access the rear drain hoses? Do you have to remove the speakers? Thanks

 

I had my indy do it for me. But from what I recall seeing in the info I gave him, yes, I believe you do have to remove the rear speakers to gain access to the rear drain hoses.

Thanks for that Renntech deal. I am having two of those hoses replaced while the inside is torn out.
Here are two images. One is my spyder sitting in a two day rain at work. Dry inside. ( it is garaged at night. ( the 996 is outside). The other image is just a sample of the oak leaves that had already COVERED the posterior drains in the Spyder. Ther drains are large at the top to capture any water, but these Oak leaves are everywhere.

Who would have thunk leaves could do so much damage but we hear a story like yours almost once a year. Glad everything worked out.
