Oil change suprise

i just got my oil and filter changed - not a big earth shattering event.

but the deal was and that is the reason for the HEADS UP.

i got it done at Pep Boys - they are having a special on Valvoline synthetic oil, $.50 per quart.

Oil, filter, washer, labor = $72.00

who knew

I must agree with the rest either do it yourself or let Porsche do it.

well, interesting comments.
i went over there to buy the oil so i could do it myself. they told me they would do it for less than i could buy the oil.
so, i stood there and read the renntech. instructions as to torque settings.
it really isnt that complicated; one nut and a twist off cap.

so, far no oil on the garage floor.

the bottom line is that these cars are really quite easy to work on, even a caveman can do it

is it easy indeed. however, these guys often mess it up somehow. they strip your drain plug or dont change the crush washer. did you use the right weight oil?

i had a sears guy that topped off my brake fluid with power steering fluid. imagine that! had to flush my brake line.

i am sure some pepboy techs are legit. however, there is a good chance they will mess you up more than your savings.

Like the old saying, you get what you pay for. I say just change it yourself. That way you know it's done correct.

Most places do not have 0w-40 to do bulk oil changes. The 9 quarts alone to buy come close to like $70-$90 so something is not adding up. You saw how easy it was for the guy to do it,next time do it yourself and know you did everything right. It will save you lots of money in the long run......

+1 on that.

i was expecting to do it myself, but it was cheaper to have them do it. that what was so unexpected.

i will do it myself next time, after my next track event, and it will be easier as i will be getting the LN engineering oil kit upgrade.

Wow you are courageous or have extreme faith in general techs.

Glad everything turned out ok and you didn't leave a trail of oil from the shop to your house.

With that said, my friend actually works at Pep Boys as a maintenance tech. He works professionally in the Finance sector making six figures but the guy is a workaholic and works at Pep Boys "for fun". His coworkers are finally used to him pulling up in a Boxster S or the ML55 during winter.

The people that do bring in high end cars usually requests him to work on their cars.

Surprisingly, he says there are quite a few people with expensive cars that bring it there. He's already done a couple Porsches and about half dozen various cars with factory Brembo brakes.

I had him mount some tires on some BBS rims for me but they couldn't balance the rears as 10" was too wide for their machines.

yeah, that is what I thought.

in any case, here is another story from Pep boys.

My youngest brought our '96 audi a4 (150k mi, broken A/C) to them to fix something minor. the mechanic put it into what he thought was reverse and promptly drove it into the back of a truck.

after 3 weeks of haggling with them (as they were paying $35 per day for a rental) they wrote me a check and let me keep the car. I sold it to the idiot who wrecked it and with the combined funds and found a 2003 Passat GLX (95k mi and everything works). not a bad trade.

took alot of work to get the deal done, but she is much happier with a car that actually works.

all thanks to the idiots at Pepboys.

I guess subconsciously I was hoping they would do the same thing to the C4S so I could trade up to a GT3.

oh well, onwards

JB
