Hey guys,
I've been lurcking on this site since November 2010 gathering information and reading all of the love/hate for the 996.
To start, i'd like to thank all of you for providing so many detailed threads about these cars and how to figure ot problems if you run acros any. I had bad luck from DAY ONE of my purchase in November and started reading when it was too late.
I bought a 1999 996 nb with 80k miles with documentation of service and repairs not knowing that the most current docments were forged and did not mention the little detail of severe metal in the oil and the need for a rebuild. I drove the car for 2 weeks ( ABSOLUTELY LOVED ) the car before i noticed it running a little strang and pulled a misfire code. Took it in to my local "indie" and he found that there were pieces of the main chan missing. So.. time for a rebuild. He took it down and found that the missing part of the chain was sucked up into the oil pump, siezed the cam gear, ripped it off and took 3 teeth from the IMS shaft. Started out with a headache and just went to the shop yesterday to see the progress and fell in love all over again.
Im not a newbie to porsche as i owned a Euro Spec 928 heavily modded but am new to the 996. I hope with a fresh rebuild i can have endless years of pleasure with her. BTW guys... i DID spend the extra cash for the LNE bearing and tensioner paddle...

Wow! Rough start! My Cayenne was the nightmare for me. It is going bye bye! Never an issue with my 911's though. That is the problem with buying used. A great savings unless something is wrong. Sounds like you are committed though. Glad to hear it :-) Drive on!
