depends what you were looking to get out of it, extra power(no), unlimited filter changes with recharge kit(yes), cool sports car sound(yes). Seems worth it to me.

Don't do it. The MAF won't last long in that oily filter environment.

He could always just use the tubing to get the sports car sound, then replace the filter with a comparable AEM dryflow or even the EVOMS.

I was making that decision earlier this year. After much research, reading about frequent reports of MAF problems with the K&N and ill-fitting installations, and after seeing that a lot of Porsche 996 race cars simply go with a drop-in BMC filter and 'red tube Cold Air Intake' (pick your brand) I went that route and don't have any complaints.

Dave can you post pictures....and do you get any audible change from the engine with the setup you are running.

I think your describing the silicone tube option the still holds the factory box, but your post is sort of confusing on whether you actually have a tube to put the filter at the intake port or just from the stock box to the plenum

I've had this setup for a while....didn't really notice sound or perf.....
Then switched to current setup which is the K&N with dry filter instead of the included filter....sound wise very nice...power? Butt dyno can't really tell. Hopefully I haven't lost any...

Unfortunately, it's a cheap ebay dry filter...I would go with a AEM or other quality dry filter...

Sorry for being a bit cryptic. Yeah, the factory airbox stays, but in place of the paper filter goes a BMC performance filter. And the intake tube connecting the throttle body with the airbox is replaced with a smooth-walled silicone tube. This bypasses the airbox's baffle or muffler and makes things a bit more throaty. I already had Fabspeed mufflers installed, so the airbox and tube combo didn't add much more sound to what the Fabspeed exhaust had already added. But, with the top down I can hear a distinct, satisfying woosh of air as the throttle is blipped.

More horsepower? I dunno. I did a baseline dyno on my car but want to wait until I chip it before I dyno again to see how many horses the muffler/BMC/cold air intake/chip added. The combo of what I have now definitely feels faster. It certainly sounds a hell of a lot better! Pretty sure I'm going to cut the life of my clutch in half because engine braking sounds so good.

Tuesday I am off to Watkins Glen for a "test". I will report on butt dyno results when i get back.

the key is to remove excess oil and to periodically clean the MAF

I would go with the 997 airbox. Updates the engine bay a lot.
