2003 996 w/ PSE on and off

Hi, I have a factory PSE system with push button loud/quieter (factory as well). Even in loud (default) mode, it seems like the PSE system will quiet the exhaust down a bit at certain and repeatable rpms. Ie... 3k to 4k seems louder sometimes in 3rd gear than in 2nd. If I'm not imagining this, which may or may not be the case, is there a way to set it or unplug something for it to stay all the way loud, all the time? The open sound is fantastic! I've not yet found what I'm looking for by searching the site and I'm not comfortable with bypasses/welding etc and dont want to throw a CEL. Thanks in advance.

This is the speed sensor that activates around 28 mph to 42 mph. The sensor will close the muffler flaps around those speeds. There are are few ways to change this but you are doing this at your own risk.

It has been about seven years since I installed mine so let me check the install notes.

If you want it loud all the time, you unplug the relay at the relay/fuse box area (check your relay/fuse box diagrams to locate which one controls the PSE; I installed mine in position #23. The factory uses #23 I think too);

or

unplug the wires (GR/RE and RE/BL) leading to and plugged into the "switch-over valve" controller in the engine. You will see this on the right-side of the engine and near and above the small "+" terminal cover in the engine. Simply press the metal bar and pull the plug. You then want to cover/seal both sides from water and dust.

The better way is to cut and tape the speed sensor wiring at/behind the relay. It is called Speedometer A Signal Wire that is colored "GR/PK." I recall that wire is gray with a pink stripe that is on jumper plug 1/1 (slot 23).

Another way (I have not tried) is to remove a small silver metal jumper on the back of the relay carrier (aka Relay Support) at Position #23, terminal #1. 1) Remove driver's footwell fuse cover; 2) take off the carpet cover by removing the four phillips screws; 3) The relay carrier can be seen clearly above and to the right of the fuse box; 4) The jumper is on the back side of the relay carrier so you must remove the 10mm bolt on the right relay carrier bracket; 5) also unclip the carrier on the left side and the relay carrier should wiggle out enough so you can see around the back; 6) Find position #23 (bottom corner) and there will be a plastic cover over the two plug position (1 & 2); 7) Slide the cover off and you will expose the silver jumper. Remove it and put everything back. The person who posted this on 4/7/03 stated he did this in 15 minutes.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the multitude of options. Will any of these set off a check engine light?

No check engine light; you'll be fine. Just do NOT unplug any vacuum lines.

now that you guys are mentioning this, i have actually done this mod for my pse as well. it involve removing one of the diode from the relay. Do a search, i remember searching on here and finding the necessary info!! once you have it remove, the exhaust flap will stay open at 2000rpm.

Jeneric, when you say "at your own risk" is there a potential for damaging side effect(s) from this?

Ka, I couldn't find what I was looking for...but I could have missed it!

I researched this a few months ago and found the simplest, easiest, most direct method was to unplug the controller in the engine bay.(orange plug on the right hand side of the engine bay... to the rear) Why? Because I don't like hacking the wiring or modifying the fuse box... this solution is easily reversible and the only precautions you need to take is to tape off the connectors against dirt and water.

I have been running like this for a few months with NO implications other than a beautiful sound....

I did post some pics either here or on Renn Tech...

Well, there should be no side effect. Of course when I work on something, I tend to break a plastic something or other. When I removed the bracket that holds the relays or fuse (cannot recall), I broke a small bracket. I was glad that part was less than $5.00. Just take your time.

I agree. However, you then lose the option of pressing the button and quiet the mufflers. On the other hand, I barely use the mute mode.

SoSoomi1...I found the pics you posted on RennTech...in the thread, you and Dharn talk about NOT having a dash switch to mute/unmute the PSE exhaust system. I HAVE the button on my dash...does that in any way change how I should go about this?

Also, I was amazed at how obvious the plug was. Black motor, orange plug!

When you disconnect the plug at the engine, you lose the mute option completely. The electrical switch you press on the dash activates the vacuum lines in the engine. If you unplug it, the vacuum lines remain open all the time.

If you cut the speedometer A wire or disconnect the jumper, you lose the mute from 28 mph to 42 mph but still can mute the entire mufflers on demand with the button.

On mine, simply disconnected the grey/pink wire. You can tape it to make sure there's no short. This simply ignores speed signals. The default is loud. Push the button if you want to to change it. Very simple. No lights or errors.

I did the diode mod last night. VERY simple. I cut just one lead on it so that if for whatever reason i wanted to - i could drop a dab of solder on it and it would be back to stock.

but really - as long as the switch works - who cares about the speed sensor!
