Winter wheels and tires...

I know it's the middle of summer, but thanksgiving is right around the corner ...

Anyone know what good deals there are for winter snow tires and wheels for a 2000 porsche 911?

Tirerack has 18" sport edition rims (look like turbo twist) and blizzaks, mounted with tax and shipping for around $1600... not bad, but not great either.

Also, would you guys recommend stepping down to 17" rims for the winter, especially with all the chicago pot holes? tirerack does not have any 17" package deals now, but it's still early in the season..

Thanks,

Dave

the width of the wheel is more important than the diameter.
i would remain at 18", but go with a 7.5" / 9.5" width.
also, get thinner tires (225 / 265) to go with the thin rims.

I would go with 17" for several reasons:

-better control in deep snow due to narrower tire

-better protection from potholes

-cheaper tire options

I've used 17" in winter for the past 5 years. No complaints.

What's the Porsche recommended winter wheel/tire combination for your car? For my C4S, the front tire size is the same, and the rears drop down to a 10x18 wheel with a 265 width tire. This works very well in the snow. I bought my set of wheels and tires from www.wheelenhancement.com and I was very happy with their service and products.

Also - it's not too early to think about this. There is a limited run of winter tires produced every year, and tire dealers will run out if you wait too long. I just bought some new wheels for my Cayenne and I've alread ordered my winter tires - expected delivery is in late August.

just get some Factory Solid Spokes for $300-$500 and omse Falken EuroWinters from Discount Tires. Im useing 265/35/18 on a 11" Rim. and 225/40/18 on 8" Rim, Works Fine for me

I agree with all of this. Definitely go with 17 inchers.

Question is why do you want to drive it in the winter? I know some drive theirs in other parts of the country but with Chicago Salt trucks and stupid drivers, you are just asking to get plowed into.

A recent member near Chicago on Rennlist just got a Porsche last fall and totaled it last winter. He did the exact same thing of what you're looking to do.

But if you must, narrow 17's would be best to cut through the snow. Here's another alternative for replacement wheels: http://www.wheelsandcaps.com/special...che%20Specials

There's no reason not to drive it all winter. You bought it to enjoy it. Most people looking buy winters buy Sport Edition Cup 4 in 18". Sub 200 wheels and good tires make the car a very fgood winter commuter.

Please call me if I can help.
