2nd Gear Syncro ?

Hello all my name is Rob, this is my first time posting but have been checking the site out for sometime now.

I currently own a 2001 Turbo w/11k miles on it, the car has been great to me and have owned it for 3yrs. I have heard quite a bit of talk surrounding the 2nd gear syncro issue. My question is whether or not all of them will eventually have this pop out problem or just some of them? Is this due to abusive driving/tracking? Just trying to get an idea of what to expect down the road and if there is any preventitve maintenance that one can take.

Thx guys!

If you do not yet have this problem I would recommend getting this...

Thanks guys, so you started having the pop out issue then you installed it? It looked to me like it needed to be installed prior to experiencing this problem, no. When does this problem usually arise in the life of the car, early or later? My mechanic svcs a 2001 like mine w/ 118k that has never had the issue, he told me not to worry as its usually on those who abuse the gearbox...

I dont think it has anything to do with "abuse" The tolerences porsche set for the gearbox needs "tweaking" from what the write up on the gbox website.

My car was a single owner car of a 70 year old man that drove it lightly... i had the car about 6 months then started having issues... I thought for sure it was too late, but i put it in and crossed my fingers. No problems since.

2nd gear syncro issue

Looking at 2002 911 Turbo. Test drove and had 2nd gear downshift grinding issue. The car only has 24K miles. Assuming its a syncro problem and dealer fixes it is it typically an ongoing problem? Does it cause permanent damage to the transmission? Trying to decide whether to walk away or ask for a warranty.

A warranty could be a good buy right now. I bought one and realized (when the hard top went on) that I had a noisy gearbox. Told the warrenty folk about it. They told me to run it into a Porsche garage and have them decide. I got a rebuilt gearbox(transmission) out of it. That quietend it down ok and it's nice and smooth now with no jumping out of gear . (not that it ever jumped out of gear anyway in the first place). It did solve the odd stall when releasing the clutch. I think they replaced the thrust bearing on the clutch at the same time.

I just got off the phone with them a moment ago about another problem that I had. He knew EXACTLY what the problem was and what needed to be done to fix it. I called 5 other places and none of them knew what it was.

These guys know our transmissions!

His knowledge was so amazing that I just ended up buying this shift detent just for the hell of it. Gotta support those who know what the hell they're talking about!!!

I've read that swapping to a 997 shifter can also resolve the issue.

One of my mechanics only works on Porsche, I was told not to worry about this issue and stated it happens to people who are generally abusive to their gear box or shift improperly. Not saying this is always the case but I am taking his advise. He owns a 2001 TT w/123k on it that has never had this problem before... Thanks for all the tips!
