When do you change you oil on your 996? [2500/3000/5000/7500] Miles
When do you change your oil?
I read about oil changes, some people change their oil at 3000 miles some at 5000 miles and some shops tells me 7500 miles.
3000 and 7500 is a huge gap...
I just called my local Porsche dealer, service advisor says even up to 15,000 miles...

3000 is just rediculous.... the oils these days are so good you are more than safe at 5000 and fairly safe at 7500, especially with synthetics. Unless of course you're tracking the thing regulary. Mine is a weekend cruiser so I am doing mine at 7500 miles. 15000 miles seems a bit extreme. On a lot of newer model cars they usually have a dash indicator that signals you when you should change your oil. The ECU considers your driving style, etc....
5k to 7.5k you should be good with a 100% syn. Does you car burn oil durning that time frame. If so you could even go longer because you just added some fresh oil. I just wouldn't go over 7.5k.
My 2 cents.
My 2 cents.
Thanks guys for the input.
No I don't burn oil big time. I'm at 5,000 miles now and went and got 9 quarts of Mobil 1 0W40 Synthetic and Oil filter. I was going to do it today but then started reading about oil changes and mileages, I thought 5,000 miles was over due but I hear 7,500. So that made me put up the question.

+1 on the 5k Castrol Syntech 5W40 (or at least once a year)
Nine_eleven - do some research. You may want the get away from 0W-40.

I make it easy on myself. Every 5000 miles when the odom hits 0000 or 5000. 2 changes so far- I hit 40,000 miles over the summer. And it has been said before, but change your oil and filter yourself! 5W40. Uh-oh, getting perilously close to another oil thread here...
Having multiple vehicles. I opt to do my oil once a year. Mileage is irrelevent. Oil breaks down after time. Currently, my 911 gets fresh oil every 4-5K miles. If I drove my 911 on a daily basis, I would not exceed 7.5K.
Nothing is "wrong" with Mobil 1. 0 is a little thin unless you are starting below freezing on a regular basis (I think auto companies like it as they get slightly better mpg ratings they can post?). 5W-40 is much better weight. Just a quick re cap from other oil discussions. I think that Mobil 1 conformed to new US regulations and cut down on ZDDP (not as good as it used to be). I'm running Amsoil Euro Blend 5W-40 and it has one of the highest ZDDP ratings on the market. I'm also changing every 5,000 miles. Very cheap insurance versus a new engine.
Mobil 1 0-40 is what the factory calls for. I change at 10000 miles or once a year (mines a daily driver so I get about 6 months out of it). Best bet is to change it yourself. Local dealer wants $280 plus tax and shop supplies. I bought the filter for 20 bucks oil for 5 a quart (takes 8.5) and gave the Jiffy lube guy a 20 dollar bill to change it as I don't have a pit in my garage.
