My key busted?

I replaced the battery in my key and the light blinks red when I press the button but nothing happens... No lock/unlock... I just got the car recently so it wasn't working... I read that I need to start the car with the key after a battery install, which I did, to no avail...

Any thoughts before I go spend too much money?

I'm not exactly sure with the 996 but I have had cars previously where you had to go through a sequence of key positions while depressing button so car and key can "learn" each others code. Do a search and see if that's the case. My dad works for Mercedes and that happens all the time

The only way i have been able to unlock the door is by using the key blade. I'll have to lookup the key position while pressing the button to see if that does the trick. :O

Ironically, I was going through the manual and came across the name of the previous owner, called him to ask questions about the maintenance, and he bit my head off.

Found this and trying shortly:

  • Enter the Porsche by the driver's seat and be sure everything is closed. This includes all doors, boot lids and bonnet.

  • 2 Insert the key into the ignition and turn it clockwise until you start the Porsche engine.

  • 3 Turn the 911 engine off and remove the key from ignition. Wait 90 seconds before continuing to the next step.

  • 4 Turn the ignition to the "On" position and wait 15 seconds. This position is as far as you can turn the key without starting the engine. The immobilization light located in the 911 dashboard clock will go out.

  • 5 Turn the ignition off again then turn it back on. After 15 seconds, the immobilization light will begin to blink.

  • 6 Enter the four digit security code using the ignition. For instance, if the first digit in the code is three you would turn the ignition from on to off, then back on. This would equal 1 digit, so you would repeat this step two more times if the first digit is "3." Afterwards, wait for the immobilization light to flash then repeat this step for the next digit. After the fourth and last digit is entered, the light will flash again to signal you are in programming mode.

  • 7 Press a button on the key fob and hold it until the LED light blinks. This will indicate it has been programmed.

Tips & Warnings

  • The immobilizer code is found in the original owner's manual. It can be provided to you by the manufacturer should you lose the code.

Check with your local Porsche dealer. He should be able to get the code for you. If you want them to program the key for you, they charge an hour's labor (typically).

Good luck!

Is there someone here on the forums that works at a dealership that I can just give my VIN to or is that not allowed? No issues with going to the stealership, just dont want to be told I need this and that and this and that...

repair key fob that will not stay shut

remove the top of key fob (the smaller half, not the one with the key), remove the guts, place the guts in the smaller half, lining up the two cutouts in the green circuit plate to the two plastic posts on the smaller half of the key fob(the top half), then carefully place the key half on top of the smaller half containing the guts & it will snap together perfectly in all three spots.
(I had a key shop show me as I tried to snap the top/smaller half to the key half and it will not snap together this way)
