New Somked LEDS - Pics
New Somked LEDS - Pics
O.K. So I had a recent thread about who could install these. I kept my appointment at Hergeshimer and they got them wired no problem. However, I do have the Hyperblinking issues, although cruise still works (I read another thread on leds in this forum and sometimes both problems happen). I searched the web and per a review on Amazon the 02+ 996's need a Relay and the part was provided so I have ordered that, which should hopefully do the trick. I am really pleased and feel it updates the look quite a bit. I'll start with one pic before and then several after. Actually, this is my first time posting pics (had to resize and now I'm uploading so hopefully this works - it says I have a limit of 5 so I wasn't able to post them all). What do you think?
Hi thanks Tarek, I think it was probably your thread but I can't remember if it mentioned the 2002 vs. other models. Some of the threads mentioned building resistors which I'm not up for, and the shop wanted to charge further to diagnose further (hadn't installed one of these before). Here's the review I read on amazon (probably not the same vendor I went with, but it looks like all of these 996 LEDS come from the same place) so I bought the relay from superbrightleds.com. It was like $15 including shipping and should arrive next week.
Review from Amazon (not me) explaning the hyperblink resolution:
I ordered these LED lights for my 2002 911 and they were packaged perfect and arrived within 2 days, not sure what all the fuss here is about. If you have a 1999-2001 Porsche 911 these will not give you any error codes- If you have a 2002-2004 you need to just buy an LED flasher RELAY, they are about $20 and you exchange it with the one in your car, just unplug yours and plug the LED relay in- thats it- the relay is near the clutch, turn your turn signal on, and you will hear it clicking on the left, reach up and touch the relays and you will actually feel the clicking, then you pull it out and install the LED FLASHER RELAY IN- it doesn't come with the lights so you need to order one, i got mine from a place called superbrightleds. com. part #CF13GL-02
Also, since I've been lurking on this board for about 6 months and getting lots of good information, I'll give some of my feedback on my 911 and upgrades (again, mostly based upon feedback from this board):
My 911 - 2002 C2 Cab blue with grey interior, bought June of this past year 2011. My first Porsche and 911 (sweet). I had always had VW's (Jetta GLX vr6 engine was sweet) and have an Audi A4 with the 3.2 (pretty nice too, after I put in a sport suspension). Anyway, it was a garage queen with only 30K miles, so according to many on this board my IMS should explode any moment (knock on wood - but I'll most likely do the upgrade when I have to replace the clutch). Did the PPI and all checked out, except a window regulator (window did not drop 1/4 inch when opening) and the drivers heated seat (a must for my wife). So, I ended up paying $30K but it's in great shape, plus it has lots of extras like the aero kit and the owner went overboard on the carbon (wheel, shifter, center consule, arm rests, door sills, vents, etc.). I'm not the type to buy that stuff aftermarket but hey I'll take it. So I think it was a pretty good deal considering used prices lately. O.K. so now for my upgrade after trolling through this board:

- B&M short shift - Love it, and if I could only have done one upgrade this would probably be it. Quick short throws makes it feel much more sporty. I've driven my buddies 997 with Porsche short shift, and I like that was well, it perhaps has a bit more play but in a luxury way. I'd be just as happy with either but the B&M costs less so it was a no brainer for me.
- Exhaust - Called about the Fister exhaust as that one comes up under many searches. I was on his waiting list for "over a month" unless I could ship him my pumpkins. I didn't have the patience so I ended up going with the After Hours Gen II, mostly becuase I could drive up to the Long Beach shop, meet one of the posters on this board (EColi - I think I got the name right), and was able to drive it. Thumbs up and I got a deal on the install, plus I figured I saved some weight. As for noise/reverberation, etc., I'll say that it's not really noticeable unless you are at low RPM and going up an incline, in which case there is some vibration in the cabin. This doesn't happen on a flat survice or going down hill. In any case, the solution is to Rev the sucker. I can't say I notice a ton more power (consistent with most of the normally aspirated mod comments on this board) but it does feel and certainly sound better.
- GT3 Replica Wheels - When purchased it had chrome RUF style rims which wasn't to my taste, so I think these are a major improvement. My wife saw them on Ebay but I was able to buy them at a local shop with free install. Very happy here.
- JVC Navigation unit - I can't remember the model number but it was like $600 on amazon plus $200 for a local shop to install. Gets me touch screen, navigation, HD radio, bluetooth. I still need a bezel to make it look better, and someone on this board pointed me in the right direction but they were out of stock....I still need to follow up.
- Rear LEDS - per this post. Love these as well, just waiting on the relay to solve hyperblinking.
- ECU Flash - Actually, right not I'm on a 5 hour Revo trial. I can't say it's a huge difference in power, but it does seem to be more responsive and has solved the hesitiation I sometimes felt going into 2nd and 3rd. The shop that installed it is switching over to Softronic so I may trial that (if they do trials) as well. Either way, it's a lot of dough but I plan on keeping this a while so I'll probably do an ECU flash of some sort.
- Smarttop - I'm not sure why I haven't done this yet since I'm a cab owner as it will give me "1 touch" up/down, but it's on my list. I've done some research and for about $300 you get "inside the cabin" one touch, but I think you have to spend another $300 for the remote version. I'm not lazy enough to drop $600 but I'll do the $300 for the internal option.
- Suspension - Again, reading this board I think the European ROW030 is probably my speed (slight drop, not too expensive). My only problem is I have the aero kit and I have to take careful angles in some places, so dropping it any further might be too much. I'm not even sure, maybe the fact that I have the aero kit means I have this suspension already? Not sure but I know the biggest differences for my cards in the past (VW jetta, Audi A4) were when I installed a new suspension. Either way, this would be further down the road absent some smoking deal.
- 911 Emblem - I think I want to replace the Carrara with a 911 emblem, similar to the 40th anniversary models or some on the new classic models. I think that would look pretty sweet especially with the new rear LEDS.
As for the spoiler, it was already on there when I bought the car, so sorry I don't know the origin. Interesting story though about the purchase, the guy I bought it from had something to do with the management/training of MMF fighter Chuck Liddell (had pictures with him in the house, etc). The owner said he had over $100K in the car which I can only assume was with stuff such as the spoiler, aero kit, carbon bits, etc. I guess these 911's were pretty close to $100K when new so I guess that makes sense. He also had a Ferrari in his garage which he said Chuck gave to him for all of his help over the years. Pretty nice gift if true.

Darn it, I had been looking to see if that type of newer Led would ever come out, but it's been like what, 8 years since the last 996 rolled off the assembly line. I even asked a few vendors that were selling the the 09+ newer LEDS to the first gen 997 guys, but none said similar LEDS for the 996 were coming. Thus, I finally went with this version. At least I got a pretty good deal and I 100% like the results. I'm betting these new ones will sell a bunch, and if reviews are good mayble I'll swap mine down the road. Thanks for posting that new link....albeit too late for me.
Hi 150,
Thanks, I hope to enjoy them more once that relay arrives (shipped yesterday from St. Louis).
As for price (can't PM yet since I'm not at 15 posts) they were $320 and included free shipping. Below is a link where I found them, and since they are located in SoCal I went to the actual location in Walnut (Inland Empire area) and being in CA I did have to pay tax as well (so total about $350 w/tax).

As for the Navigation install, I went to AudioLab in Lake Forest:
www.audiolabcarstereo.com/
Install was about $200 and that included moving the AC section down and removing the CD holder. So, it was "custom" from that perspective but they didn't use the Porsche specific bezel I've seen on some of the threads here (it's still aesthetically pleasing enough though). I'm still considering getting the trim piece from that kit but it's completely functional as is and I would definitely recommend this shop. It's been a while though so I can't remember the guys name I worked with.
Cheers
