Popped my P-virginity

Just got a 99 996 2S coupe. Very fun car, but pretty basic features, im definitely upgrading sometime in the near future, maybe a 997, or a 996 mk2 4S.

While Im introducing myself, I might as well ask a couple of dumb questions that I couldn't find the answers to via searching the forums and googling:

1. The owner's manual and websites like cars.com all recommend 87 (regular unleaded) gas, should I follow this or should I use 91 premium unleaded?

2. What oil should I use at 85k miles?

3. What are the best tires for so cal weather, with reasonable price?

Welcome!
Use 0-40 or maybe 5-40 mobil 1
Best tyres reported by users are Michelin Supersports, in Europe quite popular is Conti Sport Contact with a great performance/buck ratio

LOL..z Zookie right to the point...

+1 in the C2S thing

BTW you should try obtaining information from your owners manual as opposed to cars.com

Don't be lazy. Read it. It's all in there.

Congrats.

I hope the seller told you about the front end collision/repair. That bumper is 3 shades darker than the rest of the front end....

I just looked at my gas filler door... it says 91+ recommended.

Benvenidos.

1) 91
2) Mobil 1 0W40
3) HANKOOK V12 (1/2 the price, but not 1/2 the performance of Michelin or Conti's).

I use Castrol Syntec 5w 40, or Motul 300 5w 40 every 5,000 miles.
I use 93 octane.
Congratulations on your 996, enjoy!

At least it wasn't a rear end collision...that's where the engine is!

Welcome and have fun with your new toy!

Go and find the history of the maintenance. Look at any signs of IMS and RMS issues (leaks), see if your water pump has been replaced if not.. it will happen. If your battery is older than 2 years... get a new one... it will save a lot of issues that can start anytime now... Do NOT buy a Porsche battery.. do some searching in this forum. There are some good suggestions. Get the car aligned and balanced so you do not burn through a set of tires in 2K miles or so...and watch the wear on the insides of your rear tires.. they will go bold suddenly and unless you look for it, it might escape you. You have the 3.4 liter engine. Not a bad engine , not too powerful. Buy a Schnell cold air for 150 bucks you get a nice engine sucking noise snarl in the car (not too loud). Get a Short shifter, it is the NUMBER ONE mod you should make. About 350 bux or so..The next mod is ... NOTHING... drive the car as is... When you get familiar with it, you will know it is time to upgrade. So don't waste your money and save it for the 997'ish car you will buy in the next 2 years.. Welcome!!.

Thanks everyone. My friend who owns a 996 4S always referred to it as a 2S so i've been wrongly referring to it as the 2S as well lol. Sorry guys I was pretty tired when I wrote that post, I realized "popped my p-virginity" doesn't even make sense, it should be "p-cherry" anywho...

1. So, 91, 0W-40 M1, Hankook V12.. got it. I will go to an indy shop and get everything checked soon, and probably get an oil change.

So changing the oil every 5K is overkill? 10K then???

2. My friend who was with me noticed that they repainted the rear bumper right away when we were the the dealership, so I am aware of it, it's less obvious in person though.

3. hroussard, i share the same philosphy, my friend keeps suggesting all these mods already, but i'd rather just save my money and upgrade in a couple of years, maybe even next year. Since this will be my DD, I'll probably get used to/tired of it in a year and start lusting for a better one.

4. all i want right now is to get the key remote to work. it came with 2 used remote keys (which came with tags for programming) but neither of them unlocks/locks the car. I have been searching the interwebs for answers. Looks like I might need a new head and then programmed? anyone know of a good place in LA area???
