thoughts....

Do you guys think there is much risk in purchasing a 1999 cabrio with 82,000 miles and a clean service record? This will be a weekend/sometimes weekday driver. round trip to my office is about 33 miles (all winding backroads). I posted a link to the car - it looks great from the pics. I's local, so getting a ppi should not be too dificult.
going for a test drive tomorrow........

thanks!!!

A/C control display will need to be replaced. Not cheap.

I caught that too.

Assuming a favorable PPI, I would offer $18K. Those rear tires ain't cheap either. Good luck.

the A/C display looks like its going out but if the PPI checks out why not? The repair on the A/C display isnt that expensive, and someone on this board has done it already. Should only be $100 bucks and the LCD's are on Ebay (full kit, not just the LED's)

Perio? You'll love the 996. Just make sure you get a good PPI at a good shop familiar with porsches. Read the forums here. There a few common issues with these cars. I'm sure there's lots of nice roads in WC.

The thought of driving that (or any p car) home is what gets me through a long day of scraping teeth

Yes. There is risk in purchasing any car. Especially a 10+ y/o used sports car.

How you mitigate that risk is key. Everyone has posted excellent ways to mitigate the risk - PPI, extensive inspection by yourself, test drive, etc.

We aren't paying for it, you are. Ultimately, it comes down to are you comfortable with the level of risk.

Cheers,
FLi

Well said....and after re-reading my post maybe I should have phased it differently. I suppose I'm looking for the best way to mitigate the risk of such a purchase.
Test drive tomorrow, then if all goes well, PPI.
Good advice. Thanks!

Check out Holt. They usually have a few. Great shop for a PPI also.

I bought my 1999 C2 6 speed with 84,000 miles a couple of months ago and have had no issues what so ever; Of course have it checked out to make an informed decision. The car is a great daily driver and I am very happy that I bought mine.

Don't buy the boxster unless you a really wanting a boxster. You will find people saying you bought a chick car or that is not a real Porsche.
I am not saying there is anything wrong with a boxster. They would be a really fun tight track car.

No more risky than many used cars, and less than most. Check out where it's been serviced and that the service is current. Then have inspected and buy it if everything checks out.

I just went through all this as well. If the service book is stamped, call through the dealer(s) that worked on it and ask them for a summary of what they've done to it. I lucked out and picked up a '99 that has a great history and someone who spent a lot of money on the car (RMS, IMS, Clutch, brakes, rotors, etc) in the last 10k miles. It still needs little things (they all do) but it should be sound.
