Vehicle sales tax question out of state?

I am about to make a dealer purchase on a '01 996 out of state (I am in CA, USA). I am financing a portion of the purchase price. The dealership (NJ) has figured in the sales tax on the contract. Thus it will be rolled into the financing. I have only bought and sold vehicles in the state I live in.

My question: If they are covering the tax on the contract, I am not going to be dinged again once I go to register the car right? Also when I pay the registration fees if the tripple car tax goes away in a couple months will I get a check back for the difference?

Thanks for the info.

First off, if the dealer in NJ is shipping the car to you I don't know why they are charging you NJ tax at all. I buy cars out of state all the time and do not pay any sales tax in that state. If the dealer is telling you that they are charging you CA sales tax and are paying that tax to the state of CA, I'd get that in writing...

That being said, if you have a buyers order showing that you paid sales tax in another state, CA will credit you for the taxes you paid. (or they did me when I moved to SFO and brought my P car with me that was only 30 days old. They credited me what I paid in Texas sales tax when I bought the car.)

Can't help with your "tripple car tax" question, sorry.

They asked me if I wanted to throw the CA tax on the paperwork or if I wanted to pay for it out of pocket in CA. They are not charging me NJ tax.

So what I am hearing is that I can take my sales contract with me to the DMV to show that I have paid the sales tax? Which was written up at 7% (I know it should be 7.75% so I will cover that when I pay registration)

Yes you are correct.. you can also park the car for 90 days I believe it is, then register it and pay $0 tax (only on a used vehicle) But if your financing part of it then you can't do this because the finance company wants to see the registration. I have checked into this and DMV says this is true. I have yet to do this, but a friend has on many cars brought in from out of state.. He is also in CA. If you do get pulled over in those 90 days you then pay the fine for not registering it in the 30 day period... FYI

Sounds like they are financing the tax in with the car so that you do not have to come up with cash out of pocket to pay taxes. They will most likely just write you a check for the amount of taxes that you were charged and give it to you when you sign the papers. You then register the car in Cali and you have the check for the taxes in hand.

Red... This is the same thing many others have told me they take taxes out dealer cuts me check... I have allready sent them a very large down payment...The taxes were an after thought. I would have put less down and just cover the taxes on my own.

Out of state sales tax (California)

I bought a used car from Missouri in January of this year. When I went to the DMV all they wanted was registration fees, no sales tax. And, I did not pay any sales tax in Missouri either. I have heard that if you bring a used car into California from out of state you do not pay sales tax on it. If it is new you must pay the sales tax. Any help out there as I too am wondering about this.

Did I get lucky?

I registerd the car within the two week time frame. I did not wait. I was told that if you registar a new vehicle from out of state you will get taxed. But if the vehile is (3 or 6 i forget which one it is) months old you don't have to pay the taxes. I am eager to hear the DMV ruling on this.
