Pesky roof rack thingys...

Alright...

Someone has to have the answer to this one. How do the little covers for the roof rack work? How do they break? And How can you fix them?

I noticed that one was twisted.... went to touch it and it fell into the roofline. Nice right?!

Are you talking about the covers on the roof itself or the rack? If it's the roof covers, they just flip open (opening from the inside edge). There's a plastic hinge on both sides for them to rotate. Here are some pics of it closed and opened. Don't you have 3 other covers that you can take a look at to determine how they work? Let me know if this answers your question.

yes.. it would be the covers to the roof rail. Mine seem to be falling apart. All of them have issues with opening and closing but one seems to be broken. Im wondering wich parts i need to fix them. not saying i'll use them, but to clean you sometimes need them to operate.

I contacted Luke at Sunset and he is sending all of the replacement clips and retainers for $40.00. Each corner has 3 pieces that should be replaced at the same time.

Mine are all mangled from parking lot jackasserie. I've got the clips, how do you put them into the recess? Do you have to pull off the whole roof strip? Good thread.

Any idea how they got damaged? It seems like they wouldn't be touched at all unless you're installing a roof rack. Is it sun/heat damage?

Aero...

Im thinking that this IS a result to heat damage. They are super brittle and visibly cracked. Im waiting on the parts still and will provide pictures along with step by steps ASAP. Im not sure what im getting into but willing to take one for the team.

Here is an update guys.

I just got the parts from Luke @ Sunset. 3 different pieces per corner that look intimidating. I have no clue what to expect on this. Im assuming that i need to take apart the entire rail.... fro there, im hoping it'll be easy to figure out.

Any luck in figuring this out? From your picture, the center piece looks like the main insert. I can't quite figure out how the other two pieces fit. Also, is there a new cover (the part that flips open and close) or do you have to reuse the ones you have? I'm assuming new covers might have to be painted too. Good luck.

I havent touched 'em yet... headed out of town for Mother's Day. I'll tackle this when i return Sunday. From what i gather, the entire strip from the roof line needs to be removed.

I was washing/waxing my car last night and pushed on one of these and it now looks like the OP's third pic, kinda just indented. I'll try and get them to rotate into the open position tonight but it looks like i may be screwed.
