Muffler Mod Question

I kindly request some opinions. I'm taking my car to a fabrication/weld shop to have the mufflers modified. I have a 2002 C2 MKII with the 2nd generation mufflers.

1. Do I simply have the knockout hole punched out and have a 2" pipe run from there to the outlet?

2.Or have both the knockout hole punched out and run a pipe AND run the inlet/outlet connector pipe too.

Anyone done both? I searched and found one instance where they guy said it sounded perfect with no droning. But I am a little worried.

FD Fisters

Send them to Darrin at FD Motorsports, he'll do it correctly and get the ceramic coating to lower ambient heat. Fisters exhaust is the best low cost mod you can do and they sound great with no droning.

i did a 2"inch from the knockout hole and it sounded great. still very quiet and absolutely no drone. sounds like how the exhaust should have sounded from the factory. running the inlet/out connector pipe will make it sound like an aftermarket exhaust, much more noticeable. I doubt anyone has done both, as it probably wouldn't make a very big difference if you're doing the inlet to outlet already.

Split - Will it sound more noticeable like in an "Ebay" kind of way? or more throaty but still refined/expensive?

While the shop has them off, I figured I should do the best mod possible as time is of the essence. But I want it to seem somewhat like it could have been stock.

Found a prior guy who did both mods to his MKII and they seemed happy. I'm gonna go with the double-mod and report back to everyone. Worst case scenario is I can buy some used 996 MKII mufflers and call it an expensive "oops"

"sweeeeet! no drone or vibration at all.. same tone, louder volume. minimal differece from stock inside the cabin at cruising speed (around town and freeway). phone and stereo still in play no problem.

beautiful aggressive roar under accelleration (normal and heavy) mostly from 2800 rpm up. i would say 20% volume increase from first pse mod which was already a great improvement over stock.

outside the car... wow! sounds like the great sports car it is!!

Totally agree on the Fister D. However I am impatient and need it done ASAP and they are backlogged at the moment. No doubt the demand is due to great product. The place I am going to can do same day service. Drive in, they mod and take pictures, Drive out in the afternoon.

1. That is a "stage I mod" and is pretty quiet from what I understand.
2. I didn't know anyone did both a stage I and stage II mod.

IMHO, a stage II inlet outlet mod with a 1.75" pipe was still too quiet.

^^^ i would echo what he said

#1 gets you about 20% more sound, more roar but no one else would notice it's not stock

#2 will be better. do this if you don't want to dish out a grand or two for real exhaust

best option will be getting some straight pipes from sharkwerks or fabspeed. but that's gonna cost you and there may be smog issues too with stright pipes.

if you daily the car, go with #2.

I ended up doing both mods today. Sounds beautiful and totally tame. No issue with cellphone use and it is not embarassingly loud. I wish it were even a bit louder but it definitely sounds great. I have no idea if it sounds better than Mod 1 or Mod 2 by themselves as I did both at once.

Hey 996, enjoy the upgrades and if you ever want a little more power and deeper sound, you can always check out X Pipe Sport Cats. They will bolt right up to your existing exhaust and increase the sporty sound a little more, but make a noticeable HP and in the seat difference when driving. Let me know if you have any questions and PM me if you are interested in a special member price on it.
Thanks,

I promise you it will get louder, just give the mufflers time to settle and you won't be disappointed

Thanks,
Is this part smog legal in California (99 c2)? I'm thinking since I don't see any mention on your site it is not.
