Is it possible to confirm aftermarket cams without taking apart engine?

I recently picked up an 02 C2 with some minor mods, however the seller whom i got it from said that the first owner had some aftermarket cams installed at/from Underground racing. I wasn't sure to believe him or not cause he didnt seem like he knew much about the car. I knew more about it after doing the PPI then he did about the car. Headers, Springs would be the obvious to know if it was on ur car or not lol.

As for engine mods, its got Headers, full cat and muffler bypass, straight pipe(obnoxiously loud), K&N intake system.
The car does indeed sound very choppy compared to some videos i searched on youtube with similar set up.

I was wondering if there was any way to actually confirm if it has the cam mod upgrade with out going through the engine bay? The shop where i had the PPI wasn't able to tell therefore couldn't confirm.

Also, he said the cams were for cruising at high rpms on the hwy, the original owner had taken this car on the Gumball3000 run but didn't beat the crap out of it to hard after checking the rev history.

Call Underground Racing and see if they have an Invoice for the 1st Owner. Before I Turbocharged my Porsche, I contacted them and they don't even work on Porsche's, they said they focus on Lambroghini, Ferrari, Viper, Ford GT and Audi R8. Unless it was a custom order, I doubt they are Underground Racing Cams.

underground doesnt even work porsche lol let alone make cams. but its pretty hard to tell if a car has cams with out ripping it apart. u can try to look for support mods that most people do when installing cams (ecu upgrade, fuel system upgrades)

You could certainly tell by taking off a cam cover, kind of a pain but a lot ess than a total tear down.

In view of the Bold statements above, when you are testdriving the car at high rpms & floor the gas pedal, is the car noticably more powerfull than any other 996 you have driven? If not, maybe the owner is making a excuse for how rough the car runs. If bigger cams don't improve high rpm power they don't do anything good for you.

Thats exactly what i thought when i gave Underground racing`s site a visit.
The owner just said that it was on the list when he purchased the vehicle.
Maybe ill bring it in to another indy and have them take another look, but then i dont really wanna spend 150-200 to find out they were stock haha

The cars lower power band sucks and lags, not sure if this is from the bypass straight pipe, but on the higher RPM this thing does have a good punch although this is the first 996 i have driven so i have nothing in comparison to.
As for the choppyness exhaust tone, the car actually idles and runs extremely smooth.

Even if the are Aftermarket Cams, the most they would make on a 3.4/3.6 engine is 5-15hp. Cams alone don't do much, you have to get more air flowing into the engine, the cam duration keeps the valves open longer. Adding cams is only good if you had extensive head work done or turbo/supercharged it. And the proper way to select cams is you have to have you heads removed, flow bench them to see you max rate of airflow, then your cams and matched to the cfm of air coming into the engine.
