FabSpeed Cold Air Kit Install Tiptronic & Pics (56k Death)

I'm new to the porsche world, and the porsche "tax" for aftermarket is pretty annoying. Thus I have not bought much for the car, but I did find this item on ebay new for half the new price. Sort of a tradition (photographer in me) when I install parts on my car I like to document the install. I like to share them with others, especially now with the porsche crowd; because there are not as many of us as there were of BMW's.

This is the FabSpeed Cold Air Kit. I didn't know what to expect from this, it seemed like a silly mod. But now after having it on, its fun! Much more noise on WOT - and the rpm's feel smoother, maybe a tad quicker also. Anyway, the install was really easy.

And how is that an improvement over stock? Appears shoddy screen and that plug gap is quite the hole to pull dust past the filter....

I have to agree... I would return that and get an EVOMS intake for a little more. Much better fit, looks and an actual performance increase IMO... well it least it sounds great.

I'll look into that. Thanks for the tip. Can't believe fab charges $225 for this.

$225.00

What a rip off for such shoddy fit and finish. I would send that back and either have them send me back properly fitting parts or a refund.

Why this simple mod works

The fabspeed allows you to open up the entire top side of the filter when you remove the intake muffler. That is why it sounds throatier too, but the real reason is to open so you can draw better across the entire filter top. More cold air equals more power.

From Fabspeed:
25% better Airflow = More Power

Any 996 with JUST the COLD AIR performance enhancement kit installed will make any 996 with STOCK mufflers sound as if you have added a mild performance exhaust. Perfect for any 996 owner that wants his car to sound slightly more aggressive than stock.

Finest true hi-performance COLD-AIR intake system available.

Adds 1.5 Liters cold air by eliminating muffler in airbox. This allows engine to draw cold air across entire topside of air box (left and right rather than just from the right).

0.42 seconds faster acceleration 3000-6000 RPM. 4 ply silicone tube - better flow from airbox to throttle body. No C.E.L. light as you retain the factory MAF plastic screen/grill to straighten out airflow.

Some folks say the KN and other complete systems actually lose power due to sucking hot engine air. I don't know, just know I've read forums that have done testing and when the car gets hot they suck more hot air equalling less power than stock.

So, kudos for a simple upgrade. I've got it too. I think your homemade filter is great too. I don't have one / 6 speed, but I like it. They do sell little air filters for that as I've seen them online.

Oh, and fill the gap with something that will set up hard. No issues, but you don't want it pulling HOT air from the top side being unfiltered.

Hook line and sinker on marketing fluff. Air has no problem going around the stock part that is there. Where are the temperature probe data showing that right side of the airbox is significantly colder than the left.

If you did it for sound then enjoy. However that gaping hole needs to be sealed and will allow dirt into engine. Performance fail.

I'll seal that gap in the box and pick up a small air filter to replace my "screen" homemade filter.

The sound difference is pretty significant, and I do feel the rpm rise faster on the top end. Wouldnt say its a bad product, just not fair for the price.

Hey Hind, nice pictures and the install looks like it went smoothly. The extra vacuum hose thats covered by your screen should be better protected. On our website, we recommend buying a small breather from a local speed shop to put on the end of that hose to protect it from pulling dust or other debris. We also have our Carbon Fiber Competition Air Intake if you decide you want more power and sound, but the cold air upgrade kit looks good in the engine compartment, enjoy it and let me know if you ever need anything else.
Thanks,

Nice write up Hind. I did the same install on my C4S Tip and was elated with the improvement in sound. Overall the install is a piece of cake and while I don't think there was any appreciable difference in HP, the improvement in sound was well worth what I paid for my 2nd hand kit.

I picked up a small breather filter at Advanced Autoparts for like $15 to go on the line for the Tip. It comes with a small cone filter and is available in blue or red.

LOL @ fabspeed completely ignoring the posts about the gap in the airbox. But yea in the mean time get some silicone sealant from home depot to plug that hole up.
