996 911 Rattle
SubscribeHey guys,
One of my friends picked up a 2000 911 C2 this weekend and we noticed a slight rattle / chatter sound at idle. It's not the typical cold start rattle however, as we heard it with the car fully warmed up. It doesn't come on all the time either as far as we can tell. It sort of sounds like a Ducati dry clutch. One other thing to note is that when you depress the clutch all the way down, the noise goes away. Throw out bearing? Light weight flywheel? IMS?

It is the clutch bearing. If you are going to have the clutch bearing replaced, might as well replace the whole clutch kit. You will only be paying for the parts and IMHO is totally worth it since you have to take everything off anyways to replace the bearing.
I am pretty sure its not the IMS. Trust me, I know. I have already had the IMS failure in my car. Had to get a new engine. It is most likely the throw-out bearing if the noise goes away when you press the clutch. If the noise does not bother him, he can keep driving for a while and then just change it when he gets his clutch, unless the experts here suggest otherwise. I have know people that have been driving there cars for years without fixing the throw-out bearing.
So wait, the throw out bearing chatter is a common problem on these cars? If he ends up needing a new clutch, I'll probably talk him into getting the upgraded IMS bearing since the transmission will be out anyway.

I just picked up the IMS guardian from Brando for my own car, for the peace of mind. Scary stuff!
Did you get the IMS Guardian installed yet? Thinking about getting one for peace of mine as well. Car runs great and clutch is strong right now.I just picked up the IMS guardian from Brando for my own car, for the peace of mind. Scary stuff!
Sounds like the throwout bearing, wait until it breaks then replace the clutch. I would go to a Spec Clutch and get a class 2 the OEM will cost more and the class 2 will last longer.
