997 SSK - a MUST buy
I'm sitting here at work right where I should be making sales but instead up here on 6speed.
Anyways, I was down in the service area (perks of working at a dealership aka access to infinite tools and lifts) installing the 997 SSK on my car. There are no words to describe the difference between stock and the SSK. Believe it or not, driving normally is smoother, and driving more aggressively (heel toe downshifting and double clutching) is smoother as well. The original shift console is sloppy and now that I have felt the difference, inferior in every way.
I used to have the B&M undercar SSK and I removed that after a few days because it just didn't *feel* right to me. Anyways I still have that if anyone wants it for real cheap.
The install took me less than an hour from start to the test drive. Its honestly very simple and easy, there are several DIY instructions online and even those make it look ALOT more complicated than it is.
For anyone who drives a 996, whether you like the stock shifter or not, this is something that I highly recommend. I read about issues shifting into first when the car is cold but that is minimal and goes away once she is started up. The car is easier to drive and feels more sporty... you know the whole reason you bought a 911 in the first place. This is what the cars were supposed to come with from the factory.

The general consensus is the 997 SSK is superior to the 996 SSK. My Turbo came from the factory with the SSK so I haven't been able to justify spending the money to further upgrade it to the 997 version!
I didn't have an SSK in my old 996 C4 but I always wished I did. I'm overall happy with the 996 SSK though in my Turbo, but if I find a really great deal on the 997 SSK at some point I'll probably upgrade it. I also have the Sport steering wheel on my Turbo which is vastly superior IMHO to the stock wheel you get on a 996. It's a pretty rare option and not something you want to add aftermarket since it'll run you easily $1000. I think that's roughly how much the factory option for it was. Combined with the SSK it really makes a huge difference in the driving experience of the car!

Can you provide a link or a place where that can be purchased? I really looking into that mod since I hate the way the stock shifts and the shifter it self is a little to tall. I was thinking of getting this

I was a little skeptical on spending the money for it.

I purchased the kit from Suncoast. Laurie over there has handled my last 3 orders and gotten them out very quickly to me. Here is a link to the part: http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/X99742498300.html
Its not the cheapest kit out there but the difference is night and day. The nice thing is that it replaces the whole unit so you dont have to cut and swap any parts. You just remove the center console, loosing the 4 bolts holding the shifter group to the car, disconnect the cables after noting how many "clicks" (if you look at any of the DIY's you will know what im talking about from the pictures) in the shift cables are located in the stock shifter, and then just swap them. They look almost identical other than the plastic color and I wondered whether I had the right part or not until I installed it. Theres no mistaking it from there.
If you want the part number to look around on your own its: 997 424 983 00

The steering wheel is my next upgrade apart from laser jammers (torn between laser interceptor versus the new blinder 905 and then if I choose laser interceptor, whether or not I would need the regular heads or the HP ones for double the price). But anyways, I was considering the t96 as its thicker and the flat bottom will stop my flashlights and pocket knifes in my right pants pocket from scuffing the steering wheel everytime I slide in and out of the car.

I did the same. Just installed last weekend and so far, so good. Huge improvement from stock shifter with 80K miles.

I have the 997 SSK in the Cayman and moved the 997 shifter into my 996. The 997 shifter would be a huge improvement and cost effective. Seems a lot of 997 folks swap them out for the SSK, $100-150 range.
