RIM/TIRE Leak
RIM/TIRE Leak
I have 2pc rims on my 996 and when the temperature drops the driver side back wheel goes flat overnight. I have two brand new tires so I know its not that, I sprayed the tire with soap and there is a leak where the two pieces meet, its a slow leak but goes flat overnight when its cold. Is there a special sealant I can use that doesnt require me to remove the tire since its a 25 profile and pain in the *** to take off. Can I just use the regular fix a flat you find at Autozone? or avoid that.
DO NOT use fix-a-flat or any other such this, these are for temporary use only and if you drive on them for extended periods or at high speeds the tire could blow up.
Best thig to do would be to take it to a high end tire shop that carries the brand you have.
I would contact the manufacture and see what they suggest.

i would check the valve stem first. it is common for those to fail. if the leak is really small, you need to submerge the tire to detect the leak. stem can be changed without removing the tire in 5 mins.
could be bent wheel or nail/debris in the tire also.

Your tire shop will fix the problem in less time than it took to inflate the tire after the first deflation. Drive over there tomorrow and get it fixed. I second that the likely problem is a valve stem or nail. Not the wheel.
Its a fairly easy fix if you're a hands on type of person. First take tire/wheel to shop to remove tire. The remove all the bolts holding the rim and barrel together. Take a sharp razor blade and scrape all old silicone off. Then take a sander and sand all areas that were siliconed before. Wipe clean with acetone. Apply new HIGH TEMP GASKET Maker around where the wheel and barrel meet. Apply in continuous bead and quickly set wheel and barrel together. Reinstall all bolts using star pattern technique with threadlocker. Run another continuous bead of HIGH Temp Gasket maker on seam and let dry overnight. Reinstall tire and balance.

Some 2 pc wheels come with an O-ring seal between the rim and the barrel. Heat is said to be the culprit that will break down the O-ring since they're made primarily of rubber. If this is the case, and depending on how much you drive your car, O-rings should be checked and replaced periodically.
