Unhappy Got bad news today, need advice

I bought a 2001 996 about 3 months ago. One week after I bought it I had to replace the clutch. Then about 3 weeks later I had to buy 4 new tires. Today I got news that I have cracks in the head that has been allowing oil into the cooling system and completely blasted my engine. I must have the crappiest Porsche in existence.

Any advice on the cheapest way (within reason) that I can get this car back on the road. I have been told 15k twice. There has to be a better way. Please help!

I'm sorry to hear your bad news. On this, and other forums, I too have heard it would cost roughly $15k for a replacement engine and used at that. I guess it depends on how you feel about your car. On the positive side, you could look for an engine from a newer model that would offer you more perks than the one you have now. Or, you could replace the heads on your old engine and have a qualified rebuilder thoroughly go thru your present engine. I feel your pain. $15k is almost what I paid for my '99 C2. This is a great forum site. You're going to get a lot of responses better than mine.

Call flat 6 innovations and see if they could give you some advise.

If all else fails check with an engine rebuilder or a speed shop that works on Porsche.

I really am sorry to hear about your problem, sorry I couldn't be more help.

Sorry to hear about your trouble, it is a beautiful car. Don't make any rash decisions. Take your car to a reputable independent Porsche mechanic for a second opinion. Do some research here and on Rennlist. Cracked heads can be repaired.

+1 on what FLA996TT said -- call Jake Raby at Flat 6 -- I'm sure he's seen his fair share of intermix issues, and may have some additional information.

GL, keep us informed.

Don't panic and don't give up on your car just yet.

Most of your issues have been with respect to wearable items.

The cracked head is unfortunate, but not uncommon on these cars. Your post reminded me of an older thread. Dharn55 had a similar issue. He had his cracked head welded - apparently a better solution than a replacement head (which is just as likely to crack), and *much* cheaper. Maybe he'll provide an update on how his repair job is holding up.

Check with Auto Strasse in Costa Mesa or Bill Brewster in San Clemente. Both do a lot of 996 engine rebuilds.

18,000 miles since I fixed my cracked head/intermix and running strong. In my case I had the head fixed. But I have e a brand new 1-3 cylinder head sitting in a box if someone is interested.

hope when you replaced the clutch, you also did the IMS upgrade...Also, don/t feel too bad....I bought my 2000 for 25K in April and have since put a new transmission, IMS upgrade, Clutch, water pump, brakes/rotors, monoballs, etc which added another 18K to get the car back to normal. Then added another 7K in other upgrades like LSD, Roll bar, wheels, etc. Its been a black hole from the financial perspective and when I think about it I should have just bought a 996 GT3, but I still love the car even with all of its problems. Its really amazing on the track and its more fun to drive then my 997 with PDK.

I'm sharing this with you cause misery does love company plus we all know the risk we take with used sports cars....however, once you get everything fixed in it, it will give you incredible satisfaction...just don't think about the money.

BTW....the car looks incredible. Congrats.
