Advice for Upcoming Dyno Session (Nov 9, 2012)

This Friday, I'm going to get some baseline numbers via DynoJet 248 dynamometer. The shop primarily builds American muscle cars. The guy says he'll be doing three (3) pulls, with a 15 minute cool-down period between each.

I'm sure the guy is skilled, but based on our conversation, I'm not sure he's had too many Porsches in the shop, and am looking for advice on what gear(s) should be used for each pull. Also, would take any other advice

I would not be taking my car in to anyone I didn't already trust to be fully knowledgable. Therefore, I assume he/she knows their business and will do it properly. Otherwise, take it somewhere else. Why exactly are you paying for a service that has no relevance or benefit? Just asking. To me knowing what your RWHP is is akin to knowing what your MPG is, irrelevant because it is what it is.

I just did a baseline dyno this week at a local domestic muscle car shop (I go to a specialized independent Porsche shop for big mods but they do not have a dyno). I was fine letting them do it on my trackday project car since a lot of the parts will be replaced next week anyhow . This being said, if the car is properly strapped, not much can happen in my opinion. It was obvious they had not seen many Porsche's before, but everything went well.

I agree with the comment that the absolute rwhp number itself is not very accurate (depends on the dyno, ambient conditions, etc.) or meaningful, but if you intend to work on your engine and peripherals (I'll change the intake, exhaust, do a basic ECU tune... maybe a VF supercharger one day), comparing the power curves and the impact of the mods at different rpm's is interesting. Just my 2 cents.

Pre and post dyno would make much more sense.

Here are results from last Friday. The operator chose 4th gear based on a quick internet search (looking for the 1:1 ratio). I researched the gear ratios earlier that day at work, but forgot to bring the printout. Later that evening, I learned that 4th gear was for a different tranny (maybe a GT3 or Cup Car). Oh well.

Three pulls were performed. Each resulted in readings within 1 HP and 3 TQ of each other. Around 6300 RPM, the AFR becomes a bit rich, thus the power begins to diminish. This is all with a stock ECU, approximately 1000 miles of spark plug use, 27386 engine miles, Evoms CIA, Fabspeed mufflers.

The 2000 C2 is rated at 300 flywheel horsepower. Based on that figure, drivetrain and "wear & tear" loss is approximately 17%. Not too bad!
257 RWHP x 1.17 = 300.69 HP (flywheel)

but if you intend to work on your engine and peripherals (I'll change the intake, exhaust, do a basic ECU tune... maybe a VF supercharger one day), comparing the power curves and the impact of the mods at different rpm's is interesting
Precisely... the VF supercharger should arrive next week. Should be a fun DIY project!

Awesome!

As long as you do your After dyno with the same conditions, then your results should be substantial.

+1..... i'll be sold with a solid dyno run. With ported heads, camshaft and a big exhaust, I'm hoping for the 475hp number.

We would love to see a dyno sheet from you. I dont see how ported heads, cams and exhaust can produce more when 25-50hp. Your 3.4L would be doing better than the Engine Designers of the GT3 3.6 & 3.8 could do. Im pushing 6psi of boost through ported heads with methanol and only making 470hp.

I just would like to see a dyno sheet from you. Mine is attached.
