upgrade to 997
I've driven a 997.2 C2S, and it was very nice. I rented one in Europe and drove around Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland for a week.
I found the interior to be a nice upgrade, and I also liked the increased power and throttle response compared to my C4S. The 997 is a very nice car. The driving experience was upgraded, but still very familiar and very similar to my 996. I view the improvements as incremental.
That being said, I'm planning to skip the 997 and make my next Carrera a 991. I view the changes in that iteration as being more significant. I'm not planning to buy one for a few years, so I'm hoping to get a gently used 991 C4S that has already taken a bit of depreciation. If I were really hot to buy another Carrera right now, I'd certainly consider a 997.2 C4S, or even a turbo. However, I think the 991 is enough of an improvement that it's worth the wait over the incremental improvement offered by the 997.
That's my $.02!

I'm not sure there's any pro or con. In fact I'm sure I'm not the only nor who doesn't think it's an upgrade at all.

I agree with Dennis, apart from the interior and a couple other minor bits, there really isn't a huge innovation there for me to justify selling the 996 to get a 997. I'm a bang for the buck guy and the 996 to me represents the better value if you can get past the headlights(for some).
I will most likely hold onto my ride until the 991 becomes feasible for me or until I take my kids out of Private school, whichever comes first.

The 997 is a great car but that being said, so is the 996. As someone else just mentioned, it really is an incremental upgrade. If your considering going from a 996 c2 to a 997 c2 or c2s I dont know if its really worth it. If you go with a 997.2 c2 or c2s then it is a little better but still only marginally better and $30k more out of your pocket. If you are considering a 997 turbo or gt3 then I think that it is a justified upgrade. personally thats the only way I would get rid of my 996. That or a 991
. Of course this is all my opinion.
For the money, if you get a coilover suspension and a supercharger or turbo you will have a much faster car.

I did that last year... sold my SY 2002 for a black 997. Just for the looks it's worth it. The interior of the 996 is starting to look very dated, while the 997 looks modern and fresh.
That, oh, and the round headlights! LOL!

I don't mind my '03 Targa's interior, since it is all black, which doesn't date it as much as other colors, IMO. I was in a 997 with beige interior the other day, and I didn't really prefer it to my 996's black.
I also still kind of like the facelift headlights on my '03, which are more of a contemporary vibe. Adding the Dectane led tail lights has really made my 996 look contemporary to anyone that doesn't know Porsches well.
I think I'd personally skip ahead from 996 to 991.

That can be easily added with a stereo upgrade. However, the 996 makes so much tire and engine noise that it's difficult to have a hands-free conversation. This is especially true on the highway.
