oil indicator fail

over the past week or so I have had the following happen 2 x. About 2-3 minutes after starting the car and driving away the warning pops up saying oil indicator fail, the oil gauge drops to 0, after about 10 seconds the the warning goes off and the gauge goes back to normal. usually on colder mornings.

ideas?

Fairly common, oil pressure sending unit, simple fix. First off pull the wires and clean the terminals, this could fix the problem, if not replace the sender unit. Circled in pic.

Hey FLA - how hard is it to get to that part, pull it off, clean it, and stick it back on?

The unit is located on the forward right side of the engine just under the AC hoses. You'll need a 19mm cresent wrench to remove the sensor, but the terminals have a small nut but you don't have to remove them, as you can see in pic 2 the wires should just "unplug.". Use contact cleaner from Radio Shack or Ace etc.. You will need a good light as well, what makes this a PITA is there is very little room to work (who'da thought). Just go slow and steady. You may have to work by feel alone at times. If you feel industrious, spend the $66 and just change the unit.

I hope this helps.

We offer two different brands of the oil pressure switch. As FLA996TT it isn't really that hard to do but, I would advise getting a new one. Click Here for more information.

As Dharn55 says, do a search...several procedures details replacement of this part can be found.

The one I used (which is, I think, the one Dharn55 wrote!) is to jack up the right rear of the car and access the sender unit from underneath using a crow's foot on a ratchet extention. You'll spend far more time jacking up the car than removing/installing the sender, and you'll lose far less meat from your knuckles, that way.

Good luck.
