Any good 996's out there?
FLATT: How long do you think can I safely let my vehicle sit w/o driving it? The weather has been 15 degrees and the snow is a mess. A few months can't be all that bad...NO?
I can't risk a problem on the street. I know other people that garage them throughout the winter. I see you are talking about oil & additives.:
Jcusa....I saw a 996 with red wheels and rear view mirrors. I would've purchased it except it was a northeast car and there were logistical problems but it is crazy wonderful looking. Tell me about that. Was that a special order package that year? Makes mine look a bit boring!

As far as the oil, what can happen when cars sit for long periods without being driven water will accumulate in the oil, this is normal but that's what driving her will prevent. I know the manual states 15k or every year on oil changes, I do mine every 3-5k (depending on how hard I drive her) or every 4 months which ever comes first. DO NOT USE OIL ADDITIVES.
The LNE spin on filter adapter lets you use a NAPA spin on filter instead of the Porsche Canister type, this way you get full filtration and can use a nice synthetic media filter instead of paper. It also keeps the bypass in case the filter clogs(highly unlikely) and has antisyphon. Here is a likn to LNE: http://www.lnengineering.com/
Good info, hope this helps, let me know if I can be of further help.

Dumb question of the day, Jim.
Trickle charger goes on only if the battery's dead or before it dead? In other words do I try and turn her over first or just put it on anyway? Sorry to sound so stupid but I don't want to do anything that compromises this vehicle.
I'm much more relaxed when it comes to my Honda Pilot! The schlepp SUV is all business!
My battery tender has a few settings. Any more suggestions? I'm all ears.
Our local PCA mechanic suggested 3 to 5K for an oil change and I am totally in agreement. I do that on my Honda.
I have a cracked rib and a difficult husband so the snow's going to stay in the driveway for a bit. And unfortunately my driveway is on a grade. Our road is icy and on a hill so that's a difficult situation (in a rear driver w/ no Blizzaks)
It hadn't been driven sine December, 16th.
Getting her back into the garage on a graded driveway can be a problem.
If I can get out for a time and drive, I will, as per your suggestion.
At least I won't worry about the cold temperature now. Some streets are messy though.
Thank you!
Jax

First off, your PCA mechanic sounds good, kudo's! No the battery does not have to be dead to use a trickle charger. 3-5 is good go with 3 at first, the purpose of the trickle charger is to keep the battery from going dead.
Connect the charger, the charge light should come on, when the battery is fully charged it will stop charging, then go on as needed.
Sounds like you do have a
Since your driveway is on a grade please do be careful with ice since you're on a grade. So she's been idle for a month, not bad, I've gone three weeks. If you have a volt meter check the battery and see where it is. Also, get yourself a good tire gauge and make sure you don't loose to much air in the tires. Keep in mind, when you first drive her after she's sat for a long period it may feel bumpy, this is normal for the forst couple of miles as the tires have "flattened out" on the bottom, once warm it'll go away.
Just do the best you can, and it'll work out, let's face it, worse case, you'll need to replace the battery.
This is the time to detail the indside

BTW, my DD is a F150, also, once you start driveing her on a more regular basis you will become more comfortable with her. You'll learn her little idiosyncrocies and how she fairs, the seacret is to take it easy at first and as you go you'll gain more confidence with her. The P 911 deserves respect, it's a lot of car, but you'll learn and come to love her and everytime you get in her you'll smile.

All of this positive feedback has been great.
I used to drive a 1970 911T back in 1985. They were relatively primitive
back then and my recently purchased 996 is as modern a 911 as I could fit into my budget.
The people with serious problems were cause for concern.
That is until all of you reminded me that the 911 is an amazing car for many, many reasons.
I've often thought that if I couldn't own a Porsche, there is no other car that I would strive to own.
Thank you all again.

Is that Jon Lovett in a devil's costume?
Thank you Jim!
Very, very helpful information. Until I get comfortable with this car. (it's torture not being able to drive it and check it out in the sunshine....the garage, though is sort of heated, and still is so damn cold...I weigh about 100lbs.)
I appreciate all of the input & hand holding.
My mechanic is a legend here in Boise but he's getting up there in years and generally only works on the vintage Porsche motorcars for the serious things.
I've joined PCA so my local chapter ( I joined to have a local network) could probably help there ( everyone w/ a 'modern' Porsche has the same concerns.)
I didn't find their site helpful for a forum so that's how I surfed and ended up at 6speed.
Again, a thousand thank you's!

WOW Rocky!
She sounds totally tricked out and looks gorgeous!
Mine is but a simple gal, quietly cool and I am totally in love with her.
I will give her anything she needs. First being a LNE retrofit oil filter kit and lots of love.I keep calling her a her but she's really my new boyfriend.

I bought my 2002 in VERY rough condition. Part of the joy of owning it has been slowly bringing it back to life. And despite how badly the previous owner treated the poor car (loose exhaust bolts, broken studs, missing gaskets, leaking oil, low on oil, failed attempt at wrapping the console in suede, chipped paint/badly resprayed bumper, worn down clutch, tacky colored console pieces, failing AOS, beat up interior pieces, bald tires, etc) the car has run astonishingly well. Part of fun of owning it has been saving the car, bringing it back to life. Every conceivable upgrade and maintenance item has been addressed, and the car is my main source of joy. Had our paths not crossed, my poor 996 would probably be in a Porsche graveyard somewhere, and now it's showroom fresh and runs like a champ.

I had a 911 back in 1976 and yes they were spartan, but a whole lot of fun to drive. You're right the 911 is an amazing car, and as I said before, a lot of problems are caused by not driving them. Keep the oil fresh, I also recommend the LNE Spin on Filter Adapter, well worth the $150.
