Got Glue on my Instrument Cluster
Got Glue on my Instrument Cluster
This is pretty sad guys, I was putting on the aluminum rings onto my instrument cluster and got the glue on the plastic faces. Any of you guys ever had this happen to you? If so, any suggestions would be appreciated. I really don't want to cough up another $500 to get a used cluster.
Thanks
Thanks
What kind of glue?
Hopefully you used Silicon RTV adhesive. If that is the case, then plain old isopropyl alcohol will take it right off with no damage to the clear styrene instrument cluster cover. If you used super glue, or model cement or something else, then you are probably out of luck on getting it off cleanly. Check the glue container to see if it has removal instructions.

Yeah if it's silicon, you can heat it up w hair dryer (not overly hot) and wipe the silicon away.
Home depot sells a crazy glue remover solution. Try that but check if that'll damage the plastic on the dial covers.
Use microfiber cloth, Q tip or soft tissue and clean it slowly.
Worst case, you can pickup a used dash pod on ebay for $100-200.

Acetone will indeed dissolve the clear styrene plastic the cover is made from.
Once again, if it is RTV silicone glue that you are trying to remove, simply use Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol to remove the excess. This is also the way to remove excess or old bathroom silicone caulking.

thanks for the replys
HI guys, thanks for all the advice. You know I purchased one of these aluminum trim sets from a seller on ebay who told me it was OEM. The glue that was included with the trims was that model cement type glue. I went to the local hardware store and got glue remover but it's made it worse. Is there anywhere I can buy new plastic face gauges or do I have to replace the whole cluster? Thanks a lot guys.

Well, when I had a little super glue on my guage faces, acetone/nailpolish remover took it right off, then I hit it with armourall, worked perfectly. Guess I was lucky, why not try it, got nothing to lose now.
