Put put put

Starting a few days ago heard put put sound only out of driver side exhaust. Added injector cleaner, a little better. Still lumpy at lower rpm and cel. Code p1128 & p1130, obdII also shows cylinder 3 & 5 misfire. Is there a way to check maf? Renn forum suggests disconnecting MAF and taking short drive? Don't think it's exhaust leak and tried injector cleaner.....

If it is making a putt putt sound that could be just a header gasket leaking, try tightening the header bolts and see if that helps the gaskets are cheap and not difficult to install.

What I'd check:

-- exhaust header gasket
-- exhaust header to catalytic converter gasket
-- catalytic converter to muffler joint (it's a butt joint with a sleeve that slips over it)
-- carefully inspect the entire exhaust system for any damage (e.g. hole in the muffler)

Another possibility is a failure internal to the muffler on the driver's side of the car. There are lots of internal baffles and stuff inside the muffler cans.

Since the stock exhaust crosses over (i.e. the left side of the engine exits through the right exhaust tip, and vice-versa), check both sides carefully whist you're under the car.

Good luck.

So I tried something.. I unplugged tha MAF and let the car idle. The puttering sound went away nah it held idle at 1k for about 5 minutes nice and smooth. It started to dip a little in idle and the check engine light began to flash so i shut it back down. Flashing = bad right?

And the Winner is....

MAF took apart the system, cleaned the MAF and the intake plennum, had the negative terminal disconnedted for half an hour. Connected back up and let it run for another half hour or so, nice and quiet and smooth. I've already ordered a new one from Bosch suspecting that might be it, so will connect the new one and keep the old one as a spare. Putting her up for sale soon so I'll give it to the new owner as a spare.
