Depends on if you want a 4000 lb, 0 to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds luxury cruiser or a 3131 lb, 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds sports car.
They are so totally different you have to decide what you really want.
My vote obviously would be the 997 S.

As a frame of reference I arrived at my current 04 C4S cab after having owned an 03 SL500. I only had the SL for 2 months--I bought it for its looks, but it was the most boring car in this price range I have ever owned.(I have owned over 30 cars in as many years, including 8 Porsches, 10 BMWs and as many MBs).

Sure you wont' miss the cab? If not, get 997S. Better performance than base 997 and not that much more money. Otherwise, get a 997 cab.
SL500 doesn't have sporting intentions. It's a nice car but not a sports car. You'll get more weight than your 996 cab. The folding hardtop is nice though but I'd not take the trade off.
