Handling differences between coupe & cab?

Hey,

First thread here! I'm from Sweden so bare with me please

First some background;

I just traded in my Supra MKIV with 750RWHP for a 996 Carrera 2 cab -00! It was a trade-in-car and it really got me hooked on Porsces! I love this car more and more everytime I drive it

Now finally I'm concidering getting myself the Porsche I longed for for years and the only one I really want, a 996 Turbo or 4S, simply because the gorgeous looks of the car!

Now for the question;

Is if the difference is big in handling/performance between a 996 coupe and 996 convertible?

Thanks in advance for your time guys!

Kindest regards,

Slowpoke

Weight is going to be the biggest difference (the cab will weigh more). You will also experience a little creaking when taking hard corners, etc. I'm sure there are some other differences as well but those are the ones that come to mind.

Thanks for the fast reply!

What's the weight difference? Anything to add about the handling?
Is the 4S and Turbo much better in handling than a Carrera 2 or is it pretty close between them?

The creaking you mention is sad.
I heard and felt it right away, it doesn't suit an expensive german sportscar at all but still, it's a ton better than my old Supra

Keep the answers comming guys

First, welcome to the show. There, of course, will be a difference, so the question first is do you want to track the car? If not you probably will not notice the differences as much. And of course after you complete (yeh right) the mods. you can be pretty close. For example, With suspension (handling) and GT3 seats (weight). I have not heard any creak in cornering (of course I am also listening to my Europipes).

I have a Carrera 4 Cab.....It handles liek its on rails...I have more weight because of teh AWD and the cab, but with the PSS9 suspension its amazing.....For street driving, the differences will be minimal. For the track, you may notice a difference, but again, probably not too much. The creaks and rattles can all be addressed, I am always amazed by how quiet my cab is....no creaks, or rattles of any kind....

Thanks for the welcoming!

I probably won't track the car, however I tend to *use* the car as it was built for.
What suspension mods are you suggesting? Is the 4S or Turbo much better performance/handling wise?

The creaking I am talking about is from the front windows I think, they settle in againt the rubber list after a short while of driving though..

Thanks again!

What is the PSS9 suspension?

Do you think the 4 wheel drive makes a big difference? Still waiting for a rely whether the difference between a Carrera 2 and a 4S is big enough to feel?

Thanks in advance!

Personally I LOVE the 4 wheel drive. Some dont think the advantages of the extra grip justify the extra weight. But I love it. Although in stock form it has more undertsteer than a C2. With sway bars and PSS9's its awesome and I would say handles as good as a c2 in most conditions and better in wet less than optimum condition. Its the same system used in the Turbos. The C4 is a narrow body identical to the C2, and the C4S is a widebody, in addition to the all wheel drive the C4S has wider tires and bigger brakes. So you will get even more grip from the rear, and you will stop faster. the motor in the 996 C4s is the same as the C2. Oh PSS9's are the Bilstein PSS9 coilover suspension. You can adjust the ride height to however low you want and you can adjust the shock dampers for a smoot ride on the street and then adjust them for a very still ride on the track....the shocks can be adjusted in minutes, giving a very flexible adjustable suspension...

Well how do you like your 00 Cab?
A later model year Cab (02 on) would have a bit more zip (with 3.6) and be a tad more rigid body.

Wanting or not wanting a cab is a personal question.........some people would not have a sports car if it could not be a cab.....my wife is one.........fortunately I can drive it on nice weekends

You must drive a Turbo to appreciate dif between a 996 and Turbo........(regardless if it's coup or cab).....the Turbo is a different animal in many many ways......mind you, I did not say 'better'.......different.

I love all-wheel in these cars myself.....for me there are no downsides........I track alot (and can autocross in the winter on the snow) .

To each his own.
Have fun selecting your next Pcar.......take your time.......spend some time on the other Boards to............good luck.

Excellent answer! Thanks

Grip is something I truly miss after the Supra, it spun like an animal on the streets, fun, but not near any good at all on the streets with fast cars chasing you around town

If I do change P-car it just *has* to be for a widebody one, the 4S and Turbo are simply so much more beautiful than a narrowbody 996! Plus you get the facelift as well

How much is this Bilstein coiloversystem? Sounds expensive?

Thanks again!

Hey,

Is the 3.6 much different than he 3.4? 20HP can't be that much? Maybe the low end grunt is improved, I think my car lacks that a bit from all the M3's I've driven?

What other boards are there except rennlist.com?

Once again, thanks guys!

Well almost all Porsche mods are expensive, but you are looking at around $2K installed.....Thats not bad considering you are getting springs and shocks, installation and alignment. You dont have to realign it to adjust your shocks, only if you change the ride height.

Slowpoke, It seems that your questions have been pretty much answered already. I also think the 02-04 cabs have stiffer bodies. I also have the PSS9 (the Euro version by FVD). Cost about $2K installed. You will get a spring sound at very low speeds when you turn the wheel (which is normal).

price of PSS9

A kit of Bilstein PSS9 will run you approx 25k SEK + installation (4-5k SEK) back home.
Not cheap but apparently a great setup.
