New Member & Have Some Questions...

Hey everyone. My name is KP and am glad to join this forum and get to know you all and meet some of you at events & meets.

Well I am looking to purchase a 911 Porsche Carrera. I have been looking at more '99s-'00s because of my budget for the car. I was hoping some of you can help me find or tell me where the best place (if possible) to buy one.

Also if you please can, can you all give me links or places to check out to purchase aftermarket products? I have been looking at this forum and came across some real nice 911s in here and some of them have body kits which I want to know where to get and how much, etc.

If anybody or you know somebody who is interested I currently I have a '98 BMW M3. I have put quite some time making this car what it looks and performs today. If anybody knows about M3s here is all the work I have got done to it so far:

UUC Motorwerks Under-drive Pulleys
UUC Motorwerks Lightweight Flywheel
UUC Motorwerks Short Shifter Kit Stg. III
UUC Motorwerks Twin Silencer Exhaust
UUC Motorwerks Tranny Mount Enforcers
UUC Motorwerks Big Boy Clutch Stop
Spec Stg. II Clutch Kit & DSSR Rod
Active Autowerke Differential Support Bracket
Active Autowerke Track Pipe w/ O2 Sensors
Euro HFM
Eurospeed Intake Manifold
Vortech Supercharger Kit Stg. II+
Ground Control Track/School Coil Over Kit
18 X 8” HRE 546s Rims
Blacked Out Kidney Grills
Clear Tail Lights
Euro Ellipsoids & DDEs
Xtec 5000k HID Kit
Kamei Full Eyebrows (optional)

So I am really happy to be part of this forum and am hoping you a.ll can help me find a great Porsche and some webiste for me to check out body kits on them and aftermarket products. Thankyou very much and hope you all can help.

I would recommend looking at 00+ if your budget is inline. The 00's had a bunch of interior changes that makes the car feel 10X better esthetically. You also have the possibility of having PSM available if it were optioned on the 00' you are looking at.

SANDOVAL - What kind of changes other than the headlights were made which makes the car fell 10X better? And sorry I don't know much about the terminology used with Porshce's but what is PSM?

RobynC - My budget for the car is about $35k, but I am not looking to purchase the car until I find a buyer for my car and also till Feb/March 2006.

Also a few more questions:

1) If I were to get a '99-'00 Carrera, can the headlights be replaced with the '02 and newer lights? If possible whats the average cost?
2) Also for the same year above, can these body parts be placed onto this car:
Porsche GT3 Side Skirts
Porsche GT2 Wing
Techart Type II Front Bumper
Porsche Turbo Vented Rear Bumper
And if I can what's the average cost for those parts?

I tried searching for these, but was having a hard time finding prices...hope you all can help me, and thankyou very much!

As Eli says, the answer to the headlight question is yes, but the cost is not trivial budget 10k with paint, including the aerodynamic components you mention, though most are not porsche OEM (since a GT2 wing will not fit on your car, but a misha wing will and look similar). Also you will want to upgrade the suspension also since the 99-01 base suspension is floaty. So figure another 2-3k for an upgraded suspension.

If you want the whole car painted, like I think Eli did, then add a few grand more. Unless you or your family happen to own a body shop.

If you just wanted to do just the headlamps...

You will need much more than headlight assemblies which alone can cost more than a thousand dollars. Both fenders, front bumper and associated components must be changed. Unless you get lucky and can buy all the parts used and cheap on ebay, your looking at about 4-5k for OEM in porsche parts plus 1-2k to paint and install. I'm not saying this to scare you, but to keep it all in perspective. Also if you are looking for an 02 or newer bumper cover, I have one perpetually for sale with all the hardware, eyebrows and stuff, but you would still need headlamps and fenders.

Unless you plan on waiting a while and enjoying your car before attempting this, the body changes might be the difference between a low mileage 99 and high mileage 02. Porsche body parts, even aftermarket are quite expensive.

FYI: More than just the headlamps changed for 02+. About 25 more HP min (325 base or 345 powerkit), stiffer chassis, improved interior and stiffer suspension and a slew of more options.

As for 99 vs. 00, the headliner and all plastic trim were improved a lot. According to Eric, the plug guy, I don't think you can even paint the center console on a 99 due to the material used.

I also think the 00 has 5hp according to the stated spec 295vs300hp.

The only major advantage of a 99 is that if it has the traction control option it has a real limited slip differental if you track the car.

In 2000 Porsche replaced the option with PSM, which is stability control, which individually brakes the wheels to simulate a LSD, but more importantly tries to keep the cars attitude and direction matched to the driver input. It can really save your life, trust me!!!, but it is an option so not every car has it. Porsche did not make it standard until the 2005 997.

Good luck with your choice and don't forget to have a porsche mechanic look at the car before you purchase....

Cheers,
Corey

Damn! So if I were to get a 99-00 911 I'm looking at another $10,000 on the things I am looking for (Front Bumper, Side Skirts, Rear Bumper, Rear Spoiler, Headlights)?

and don't forget fenders since the you need to change fenders to change headlamps and all the other hardware and wiring needed for the swap.

Welcome to the wonderful world of porsche pricing. BTW, to put an aerokit on an 02, which would not even require new lights and fenders typically costs a min of 7-8K with paint. Though porsche has been doing a stock adjustment sale on the aerokit II(02+ 996) lately for 3-4k plus 1-2k for paint and install.

I agree, that looks like the best option if you can swing it. Most of the most desirable mods or options already appear to be there.

I hope the PM I sent you helped out.....

The whole project will cost between 5K-20K depending on the options you choose. With mine I ended up putting on the kit at the same time Xenon lights and yes I had the whole car painted again which was pretty expensive by a good shop.

Well depending on my budget by February I will see what I can and can't do. If I have to I will pass up on the headlight conversion and just get:

Porsche GT3 Side Skirts
Porsche GT2 Wing
Techart Type II Front Bumper
Porsche Turbo Vented Rear Bumper

Approximately how much for the parts above...I have a friend that has a bodyshop which can install the pieces and paint them too.

Prices change on these items at times so it would be best to contact the vendors when you're ready to make your move. I'd say with the non-OEM items they might come down some. With the OEM that might not be the case...... I've seen on huge price change last year, about 30% change.
