Does this shock installation look "off"...??
Does this shock installation look "off"...??
Just installed shocks/struts and new springs on all 4 corners. Its in for an alignment tomorrow (after 150 miles of break-in today).
I was showing off some pics of the job, and noticed something funny....
The rubber piece at the top of the springs is tapered (to make up the gap of the spring end). (pic 1)
I don't think its an issue, but my new spring is turned about 90 degrees more than the old one... (pic 2)
Its all tight and feels great. I just don't want to find out I somehow missed something obvious here...
Thanks all! It was a pretty easy job thanks to this forum!
Best,
Bill

Yeah, I just wanted to be sure before I brought it in. Didn't want them to try and align it this way, then find out I had it in wrong, redo it, align again, etc...
Its heading to the shop now!

The tech said it all looked good. But a few folks on here have mentioned that I need to fix the "top hat"...?
I can unbolt the shock and twist the spring if I have to. But I am not sure what that would do for me??

Park on a level ground and measure your lowering amount and compare side to side to see if there are any variance. Usually done from center of wheel to fender. If there is no variances, you can elect not to redo the top hat but you should really redo it anyways.

Thanks alpine003. There is no difference at all. Both fronts dropped almost 1.5" and are even.
The top of the spring is actually in that indentation of the coil stop. Its just that the entire thing (spring and stop) are rotated about 90 degrees. When I was putting it together on the ground, there was nothing showing it had to be one or the other. And the top of the spring stayed flat and even no matter how I spun it.
I think I will turn it just to be consistent though.
Thanks again!
