Happy Birthday to my Car -- 15 Years
Hard to believe, but yesterday was exactly 15 years since the day I picked up my car from the dealer. I special ordered it in mid-December 2000 and it arrived three months later. Below are a couple of pictures I took today.
Everything is original except for the wheels and tires (the wheels are Porsche hollow spoke Sport Techno 18", which I bought in 2012) and the steering wheel which I replaced with the 3-spoke leather one (original was 4-spoke with vinyl airbag hub).
I now have 9,217 miles, and the car still smells new. It's been a fun 15 years.

Once you decide that you're not going to drive it in the rain, after the rain, if rain is predicted, or if there is snow/slush on the ground or melting, then on Long Island, the car sits in the garage a lot!

I would be more proud to own a 15 year old 996 with a half million miles on it than your car. You lost one hell of a lot of money in your deal. How much was it in 2000??? About 70 grand??? its now worth under 20 grand. $50 grand its cost you to drive 10,000 miles. I would go and hide in your garage with your car if I was you. Then you say its been fun for the last 15years.... DOING WHAT? Certainly not driving. DUH Seems to me that you thought you were going to make money by not driving a Porsche for 15years. You may have got your money back if it was air cooled. You seemed to have picked the wrong model in the 996. Not that you would know that fact at the time of buying. Taking nothing away from you, you have a wonderful car. And so you should have. I hope you have the double race IMS in the engine. At that low a mileage, you just may be quote "driving or not driving" a ticking time bomb. TIMHO
I see a lot of negativity in your post (every sentence in your post contains a negative remark), which is not what this forum is all about. To quote the well-worn cliché, if you don't have something positive to say, don't say anything (or go to another forum).
Yes, I paid over $80k for my car in 2001, but I didn't buy it expecting that it would not depreciate. Furthermore, if you think for a moment that I would sell it for $20k today, you're delusional, but since I have no intention of selling it anytime soon, that's completely irrelevant.
To say I "picked the wrong model," is silly since I bought my car new, and Porsche only offers only the latest generation of 911 when building a new 911, so it's not like I chose the 996 version over some other version.
Contrary to what you might believe, nobody avoids driving their car so as to increase its resale value. Some of us have other cars to use for transportation (incidentally, even my daily car only gets used around 5,000 miles a year) and have other demands on their time.
Since I drive my car infrequently, when I do drive it, it is an event rather than mere transportation. During the last 15 years I've enjoyed driving my car to numerous PCA concours, autocrosses and other club events and met up with PCA members who have always been great company to hang out with and share our mutual interest in cars. Luckily, I've never run into anyone like you.
I'm not losing sleep over the IMS issue like you apparently are, because my oil analysis and close examination of my oil filter element show no signs of metal shavings or other irregularities. It's therefore really far-fetched to be saying that I'm driving (or storing) a ticking time bomb.
In the meantime, I'll be on the lookout for a used 996 with 500k miles so that you can be "more proud to own a 15 year old 996 with a half million miles on it" than owning my car.
Indicator lights for the radar detector.

^Nice retort^! Your car looks/IS awesome, and you live in (arguably)one of the best places in the world! It's good to be you (which you seem to know and be comfortable with...). Much health and happiness to you and yours in the future! :-)
WOW. that's a keeper for sure. it is brand new. I just did an IMS and rear main on a 2003 this weekend. car had 86000 miles tip trans, very little wear to the IMS and no signs of failure. RMS was showing more signs of aging out than anything else. replaced both as preventive. changed fluid and added new tq converter seal just to make sure good for another 60000.
I would not worry about your car having that little use. frequent preventive oil changes and attention to any leaks if they should apear, will keep you in good stead. thanks for being a good steward to a very good car. Robby.

I'm kind of with the negative posts above. It's been said the more these cars are driven the less problems that occur, not to mention the fun of driving one and how much these cars unexpectedly depreciated over the past 4-5 years.
Everyone has their own preference for how their car should be treated. It's your car and you sound happy so good for you. I would never buy a 996 with less than 50,000 miles personally
