As you may know, I blew the #2 cylinder in my 3.4 996 (good luck 3.4L CaymanS owners!) and I am very close to pulling the trigger on a 997S 3.8L motor swap in my 996. Thanks for the assistance Evan!!!

I can get a turbo motor for a great deal right now. Since the turbo can get more mods (and hp!). I'd like to know if anyone knows of a na 996 getting a turbo motor and the cost.

I want to make sure I'm going with the best alternative.

WOOOO HOOOO!!!! TURBO!!!!

if you strongly feel that the m96 engine won't cut it then don't think the 3.8L will cut it for you either. it's based on the same integrated drysump, nay, wetsump block, yes?

i guess it's hit and miss with the m96 engine. they race them in grand am have heard they do quite well. i have an 80K engine and i just had sharkwerks install my SC. i have pretty good faith in it BUT when/if it does go (knock wood) i would just build up another 3.4/3.6 lower the compression, upgrade the rods, pistons, head studs (normal race upgrades) and raise the rev limit to 8200 . that would be sweet.

oh ya, if you like high revving engines then the TT might not be the way to go. it has a 6500~6700 rev limit IIRC. you would have to use the TT tranny too, right? if not, you would have to re-gear the 996 tranny for more HP/torque. you would have to use the TT ecu as well right? i would imagine with the 3.8L conversion you would use your existing ecu and just flash it.

man you will be my hero if you can get the TT conversion in. it would be your own custom gt2. hehe, minus the suspension, brakes, chassis, headlights, wheels, badge..... . you definitely would need 12 inchers at the rear

BTW, what kind of racing do you do? is this for racing or DE or just ****s and giggles? i ask because, with PCA club racing, you might throw your car into a higher class and make it uncompetitive or just not allowed. with grand am your car won't be eligible. you can run with NASA's gts challenge (based on HP/weight). not sure about SCCA

if it's for DE/****s and giggles.... hell i am all for it .

I'd do the GT3 motor myself. Great power and the turbo block (which is the old 993 block) without the need for finding a place to fit the intercoolers.

Keep us posted, this is interesting.

oh ya that's right! kinda like this one on evo's site. i guess one negative thing about this configuration is heat soak from the engine.

How does Ruf do it? They do narrow body Turbos and I am SURE they are very well thought out and engineered....maybe a call to them will shed some light on the subject.

too much probably. i would imagine that upgrade requires changing some internals. i'd just go get a tt at that point.

9ff's narrow body 800hp turbo monster is on a narrow body. I think they put the intercoolers in the lower rear where a muffler would go if you weren't using straight pipes!

I thought Christmas came early yesterday when I bought a nearly new turbo motor on ebay for less than 10K! GOt up this morning and the Grinch took it back. FU*K! - I was (am) bummed!! Got a message from ebay the sellers account has been suspended. Ebay needs to get it's act together and require people to submit significant personal info. before allowing then to post an item selling in the thousands.

Probably just go with the 997 3.8s - I can do it for about $16-17K. What block is that?

Any leads on a turbo, GT3, or CarreraGT motor would be appreciated. My all white car would make a killer 996gt3rsc 3.8 clone.

the 3.6l motors can be had for about 8.5K. i can't imagine the 3.8s motor is almost double that. if that was the case, i would just get a new 3.6 and supercharge it.
