Reinstalling / Regluing the fallen rearview mirror

Tried searching the 996 Forum and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. There was something on Rennlist but lacked details on my main concerns and issues on re-attaching the rearview mirror assembly back to the windshield.

So, one night the 996 alarm blasts away waking us up and the neighbors because the rearview mirror assembly came off. Maybe because the car is 19 years old and the adhesive dried up or something.

Planning to use Permatex 81840 Extreme Rearview Mirror Profressional Strength Adhesive Kit for the job. Hope you guys dont mind sharing your experience if youve gone through this ordeal. Here are my questions:

1. Do I completely remove this circular transparent rubber thing on the metal disc attached to the stalk?

2. Can I actually remove the whole gray metal disc off the stalk? I tried to use a special type of pliers and was able to rotate the disc a few millimeters clock and counter clockwise but it wouldn't detach! Do I go clock or counter?

2. If I remove the rubber thing, do I need to scrape or sand off the gray paint on the disc to expose the metal surface?

3. On the windshield, on the exact location where the rearview mirror assembly is glued/mounted, there's this black marker that looks like a black film. Do I need to scrape this off down to the glass?

I took out the stalk with the ball off the mirror and there's this circular clamp that I will definitely have a difficult time putting back on if I decide to glue only the stalk on the windshield. So I might decide to glue the whole assembly back on and figure out how to use tape to initially secure it. Really a PITA! Any suggestions how to go about this step?

Would appreciate some feedback from those who had experienced this, TIA!

So I did some research and found out that the best adhesive to use would either be Versachem or Loctite AA 326 activated by Loctite 7649. I went with the Loctite...

Did a little carpentry; measured the rearview mirror stalk up to the shift stick base and cut a 1x4 piece of wood to use as a support to the whole RV assembly While adhesive fully dries up. Used some tape and zip ties to sercure the RV assembly in place.

So, to answer my own questions, no need to scrape of black film on the windshield, just spray on Loctite 7649 on it. No need to use the rubber pad - throw that away. You need to use sandpaper on the gray disc until you reach the metal surface completely erasing the gray paint. Then apply Loctite AA 326 on the clean disc and immediately stick it on the windshield.

Only after 3O mins...so far... I've driven for about an hour, drove over potholes and speed bumps... the rearview mirror assembly is still there in place. Let's Check again after a week or so...

I hope this helps you guys.
