Finally!...after several cuts on the Laser machine and many minor adjustmens to get all the holes properly aligned, here is the final product. In the end, the four small holes for the studs that hold the battery down had to be drilled using a drill press becuse the laser machine could not cleanly blow through the 3/8" thick aluminum in with such a small radius. So, we programmed the laser machine to etch a crosshair on the plate and then hand drilled the holes for the studs. The plate is high grade T60/61 aircraft aluminum, and the studs, nuts and lock washers are stainless steel. The small scalloped pieces (one on each side of the battery) are 1/8" aluminum. Because of the thickness we were able to use the machine to cut these holes. Here are the pic's!

Hopefully will have it in the next day or so. My fabricator has been swampped. He usually gives me better than street pricing on projects so I don't want to push him too hard. He told me this a.m. that he would try to get it priced out this afternoon. As soon as I get pricing....I'll post it!

I believe taht the only differnece between the Red top and the yellow top batteries is that the yellow top battey is a deep cycle battery... I could be wrong but I think the footprints are identical

One final thing, and please pardon my ignorance, what's the benefit of using this style battery (be it red or yellow top) over the stock Porsche battery? Is it just weight, or is there a performance issue as well?

And this base plate fastens to the OE base how ?

 

As long as the group size is the same, the yellow top and red top are the same size. The one in the photo is a group 34/78, which is the same size as a group 34, except that it has top and side posts, instead of just top posts. The advantages of the Optima batteries are that they have more cranking power (the Porsche battery has very low CCA); are completely sealed; resist going dead a lot better than other batteries when left sitting; have a much longer life span; and are lighter.

99 996 coupe. I installed an optima 34R (reverse post) with a HDP plate. The size of the optima is smaller than OE and all covers fit perfectly. .

Yeah, I'm pretty interested in getting one too if the price is right just in case I decide to go Optima.

 

To GreggT....Note the 2 holes nearest the rounded edge of the aluminum plate.....These holes line up with the OEM plate that holds the battery. If you discard the hold down clip and use the bolt..it ought to fit perfectly into either of the threaded holes in the OEM plate.

As soon as the fabricator gives me a price I will post it. Quite frankly, I expected a price yesterday but had a hard drive failure on my machine late Monday and have been working furiously to restore all my data since then and haven't had the time to call him and push him for pricing. I will call him in the morning.
