Shifter Feels Notchy After Start-up

I recently purchased a 2003 Carrera with manual transmission. After start up and during the initial warm up period the gear box seems a bit notchy, meaning I can’t make smooth shifts. When warmed up (about 5-7 minutes) it works perfectly fine. I didn’t have this condition with my previous 2002 Boxster 5 speed trans. Is this normal for the six speed or something I should consult my local Indy about?

thanks
Joe

This seems to be a common issues with 996, mine is the same way. It takes approx the same time to warm engine yo 180F so I just do not go crazy till both engine and the gearbox are warm

I’ve heard the same from others on separate 996 forums. Thanks for your feedback. I also changed out my motor mounts but after a few hundred miles of driving, I didn’t experience much of a change, if any. I’ll be changing out my shifter for a 997 version soon to reduce some minor side-to-side movement, but again, don’t expect this condition to be resolved. I’m using your advice of just taking it real easy until reaching full warm up.

I have a 1999 C2, same issue. It may actually have become more noticeable when I switched to an upgraded Porsche 997 short shifter. I was wondering if it was the trans mount (i did the engine mounts) or I should replace the cables.

If it were the transmission mount, I would think the condition would persist whether or not the car was cold, or warmed up. After 15 minutes or so, the car shifts nicely. I reviewed past maintenance records provided by previous owners and the diff fluid was changed in 2016 with a Mobil 1 product. I’ve heard others state that they had some degree of success when changing the fluid. I’ve purchased the Porsche brand diff fluid (from Pelican Parts) and plan to make the change as soon as my lift bars arrive. I’ll check back when done and after I’ve driven it a few times..
