It's not a hard thing to do, but very cool that you did it!

Did you go with a 2-way or 3-way setup?What size? V2s or K2s?

And what sub are you going with?

I did the 165V3E setup, 3 ways so I got the better 3 way crossovers...6.5" woofer, 4"(more like 3.5") mid and 1" tweeter. No it wasnt hard, just ALOT of modification of the speaker pods with the dremel tool....i had to cut away ALOT drill new wholes and seal it all with silicone.

True...Good stuff...

How are you going to run the amps...I would try and set it up to have control over the dash speakers, seperately from the doors. They will probably be very bright bouncing right off the glass at head level YIKES!!

What did you put in the rear?

I am running one amp (for now maybe) The front speakers off 2 channels of the amp, the rears off the rear channels of the deack and bridging the other 2 channels of my amp for the sub. I am using the Audison LRX 300.4. The crossovers for the 3 way speakers have adjust able tweeter levels, so you can set it to 0, -3db and -6db for exactly the reason you said. I have not gotten the sub yet, but I am getting this one from AI sesign in NY state. It's a custom box with a JL Audio 8w3 driver in it.

Newport

Nice!

Did you see the Monney Audio version I posted on the other thread?
Not as pretty as AiDesign's but overall I think its a less obtrusive location. Probably costs less than AiDesign, who is known for its Porsche premium.

http://www.monney.com/boxster.htm

I've been told by many an installer that 6.5's fit. Never had Focal's confirmed but every installer I spoken to has done 6.5 in the doors with stock covers.

I wonder why Rod Birch goes through the trouble of breaking apart 3-way Focals and replacing the 6.5 with the 5WS? Seems like alot of needless expense.

Yes I did see the Monney Audio version....I liked it and considered it in my Boxster but I know that that cannot generate enough low end with that little air in the enclosure. Plus, most people sit down and put their legs straight out...that would be right into the woofer...after a while it will take its toll. The AI design box while taking a little more space, is a little more out of the way. Besides being in the same location as the Bose sub box and about the same size, it fits like the factory system, and I have never heard anyone complain about the intrusiveness of that box, just that it doesnt deliver enough low end. I actually heard the Monney Audio sub in a Boxster and well I was NOT impressed with the sound...It could easily have been the sound system, but it was a complete system done by a Porsche knowledgable shop here in LA..I am assured by AI design that this box POUNDS and is equivalent to their 2 10" box for the coupe in the rear. yes when I bought the Focals, I asked for the 155 V3E, which isnt made anymore. That had the 3 way speakers with a 5.25" woofer, but they kept saying they do the 6.5" all the time. I then talked to AI design who said they would modify the door pods there and send them to me ready to bolt in as they do 6.5" doos speakers all the time in 996's....I talked to Rod Birch too, he said the 5WS's are no longer made, but there is another 5.25" woofer from a 2 way system that he exchanges with Focal. The only reason I see him doing this is money and time. The 5.25" woofer is probably 90-95% of the sound of the 6.5"...and if you run a sub, then you'll be covered...so why spend the time and money modding the speaker pod when the smaller woofer is a more direct drop in. So far i LOVE my Focal and Audisons....I will replace my rears with Focals as well....just debating between coax or seperates. Probably go with coax....I hope to have my AI Design Sub this week as well so I can finish up the install this week, but the 6.5" Focal door speaker has WAAAAY more low end than the Porsche and is WAAAAAAY more efficient...
