Car popping out of second gear...anyone?

I've had this problem off and on since I got the car (four times), I thought it was driver error until I heard on another board that others had experienced this as well. It will pop out of gear when I let off the gas, no particular speed or rpm, typically though my speed is rather low (under 40). Anyone else have this problem? She is at the dealer right now for her 15k service with no oil leaks found! But, they were actually able to reproduce this problem with the tech who test drove her. So they are looking into it.

Not good...do a search
I had this problem on my TT at less than 2K miles and the only fix was a new tranny. My dealer did it with no questions asked as they had previously had the same problem on 4 other TTs!!!

The fix will be to replace the tranny.

my '02 996 cab had that problem around 2,000 miles. Had a new tranny put in without problem by the dealer.....

If your tech can actually verify this problem, then it should be adequate reason to change it out.

Robyn,

I have read on one of the forums that this is a known problem on earlier gearboxes. Not sure from what date the fault was addressed though.

I'm fairly sure that there is a TSB which covers this - Maybe ask Loren on Renntech...

It is a known problem... Like others have said, only anecdote is to have the tranny replaced. Good luck!

Do you have a SSK? My car has popped out of 2nd before though... I thought it was my fault for resting my hand on the shift ****.

No, no SSK, not yet. Which I am sure helped my case at the dealer. I've heard resting ones hand on the shifter is not a good idea as it could cause undue wear on the synchros...not sure if there is any truth to that. I haven't heard anything yet from them on the status of things.

This happened to my friend's Supra Turbo right after he bought it back in 97'. There was not fix so the dealer had to put in a new getrag transmission under warranty. You'll probably need to get a new tranny from the dealer.

Update: Car popping out of 2nd gear

New Tranny it is! It doesn't include a new clutch or flywheel. I doubt I need either with so few miles on the car. So many negative stories lately about bad service and such, on a sunny note, Porsche and my dealer (Which is Stead in Walnut Creek) has stepped up to the plate to take care of business. If it weren't for such great service of my Porsches from dealers such as them, I probably would have left the fold long ago.

Robyn,
Man that stinks...glad to hear they are treating you right tho. You should consider getting a lighter flywheel installed while they have the tranny out. I think EVO has a good one.

Just a thought...so what kind of loaner do you have while they are fixing it?

Barebones - For MY 02, there is a TSB for this problem. They have a specific vin range of affected models for that year, yours could be one of them. I'd take it into the dealer and have them run a check on it. Good luck.
