One way that the window regulator fails
One way that the window regulator fails
Last weekend I replaced the regulator in the driver's door because the glass had stopped automatically dropping when opening the door. In my case the motor still worked fine.
I determine that the regulator was bad by following the advice I found here in other posts; 1) place the glass in about the 1/2 open position, 2) grab the glass with your hands and attempt to move the glass up/down. I could easily move the driver's side glass about 3/4 of an inch compared to ~zero for the passenger side. If I pressed the glass down by hand and then closed the door it would correctly lift in to position.
Once the old regulator was out I could see that the cable tensioning springs were noticeably relaxed on the old unit. I suspect the combination of cable stretch, pulley wear, etc. contribute to this failure mode.
I purchase the replacement regulator on eBay from motorworks1957 @ http://www.smithmotorworks.com/ for a total delivered price of $181. The unit was in stock and promptly shipped via express mail. It took me about and hour to remove the old unit and then a couple more installing the new unit, taking pictures, re-adjusting the fit, etc. All-in-all this was an easy Saturday morning project.
