odometer ****

I just noticed that my odometer **** has been broken off in my car probaly for a week. Valet? Auto detailers? I have no idea how it happened and the stem piece is not on the floor.

It looks like they have to pull the speedo to replace it. Any similar experiences?

Porsche sells the **** but not the shaft. The shaft is plastic on your year. Hope the shaft was not broken off.

Yea, the shaft appears broken, it is a 1/4 inch nub. Do they have to replace the speedo to fix it?

Porsche does not sell the shaft so a Porsche dealer cannot fix it. My dealer also takes the position that if a cluster has been opened up then the warranty is over. Contact your dealer - bet you will be told that the cluster needs to be replaced.

The top cluster is the style with the plastic shafts. The shafts have been removed and are sitting on top of the separated cluster. The bottom cluster is the older style with metal shafts.

Suggest you try a speedometer shop. But when I checked a few years ago at a few speedometer shops I was told that VDO did not sell parts for the electronic cluster. Maybe they can make a new shaft or fix your broken one. Let me know if you find a place since you are not the first one with a broken shaft.

Also might look around for a defective cluster and use it for parts. The plastic shafts were used in the 2001-2004 Boxster and 2002-2004 996 and 996 turbo.

Call Hollywood Speedometer to see if they can fix it. I'm sure the dealer will charge you an arm and a leg.

Well, at least you did not get "the shaft."

You have a nice dealer because someone hit the **** with something and broke the plastic shaft, most likely a cleaning cloth.

Maybe I'll see that cluster one day on ebay....

Hi gang,

I had exactly the same thing happen on my Boxster S I had a few years ago. I caught the end of the **** with a cleaning towel and snapped it right off. There's no gluing it back on. Trust me.

I looked into buying a dead cluster off of eBay and harvesting the stalk out of that. I was just about ready to do that when I stopped by my dealer and asked about it. Same story. Replace the entire cluster. HOWEVER, one of their mechanics was standing there and said "Hold on a sec" and he headed to the back. He came back a few minutes later with a whole bag full of those stalks! He said that whenever they get in a dead cluster he takes them apart and keeps the usable parts. He just gave me one.

So, before you spend a lot of money, check with your local mechanic...

-Charles
