K&N drop in filter

Anyone here running the K&N drop in filter in the stock airbox? Does it make any power, better breathing? Andy

If you do a search on this you'll find a lot on this subject and a lot are bad. I would recommend not messing with a K&N or any other wet oil filters if that's what you are inquiring about. Too many CELs and trashed MAFs.

Believe it or not, mine has been installed about 8 months ago an about 2k miles now and still no CEL. Lucky I guess. As for power boost, didn't feel any different at all.

I have had a K&N filter in for over a year.
Works great and has a nice growl!

Andy,
A filter change is not going to give you any power. It'll sound different, but that's it. Oftentimes we mistake loud for power. If someone claims it makes horsepower, ask for a dyno sheet.

more air into the motor will make a difference

before you install a K&N filter just run an air hose over it... get out the excesss oil.

I would really look at the cold air K&N system.. available at Vivid for around $300 bux... I LOVE mine.. and that product made WAY more HP than the drop filter and Fabpseed setup. My friend tested the two back to back on his 99 996 and saw a 11whp difference on 3 different test

I have had the K&N filter on for a year and a half. It is completely worthless if you ask me. After a year it was hardly even dirty, so it couldn't have had much air running through it. Certainly it is not worth risking your MAF. Stick with the OEM dry filter.

I believe Vivid did a dyno on the K&N system and it made a horsepower, however the K&N replacement filter won't get you squat.

Hey Andy,

I'd say wait and go with the Evo Intake. The Evo intake does have an K&N oiled filter but I have not had any MAF issues with it. MAF may also give false readings depending on how the new intake places the unit. From my research the Evo is the most reliable one.

being a newbie and reading all the boards..the consensus is pretty much 50/50.

Will your MAF go out? Maybe, maybe not...

but to me it is too much of a gamble. No aftermarket filter system can GUARANTEE no CEL or MAF issue. If there is one that can make that statement I would buy it.

I am just too worried that I will be one of the UNLUCKY ones..and my CEL will come on..and $900 later..new MAF...over a damn intake. Fugheddaboutit.

but I did do the "orange cap" mod! sure sounds good at WOT but thats all it is....kinda like the clothes pin and baseball card on your bike spokes...just makes a cool sound.

One thing I would like to add is that MAF, like O2 sensors, do go out on their own. Several of my friends with completely stock 1999 C4 and 2000 C4 cab had to replace their MAF as part of having their car.

The 1999 had always been completely stock and the 2000 C4 only has Fabspeed mufflers installed.

Anytime my 1999 MAF acts up or sensor says it needs replacing, I pull it out and clean it with a Q-Tip and Electronics Cleaner..........good as new and have never had to replace it!

i have read the the K&N intake system w/ a dry cone filter a la AEM will give you the same performance but w/o the risk of using an oiled filter to mess up the MAF.

All you have to do is to make sure the MAF is one= the right way and wipe off or air spray off any excess oil from the filer. People that get the CEL that I know just placed the MAF the wrong way. They wont admit to installing it the right way, but when I showed them, the warning is gone.
