Question ECU modification

Has anyone with a 1999-2001 996 (normaly aspirated) had their ECU modified by Powerchip,GIAC etc? Can you tell any difference?
Problems? 93 octane is available everywhere and one station carries 100 octane so reprogramming for octane over 91 is no problem.Thanks...............Steve

I think gains with an ECU on an NA car are minimal...

I had the headers, exhaust, and air intake with no ECU mod and noticed very little performance difference. I then did the GIAC ECu upgrade, and definately noticed a kick in the pants. I think you should get the other stuff to go with the ECU mod. One without the other is pretty useless.

Fanman, I have Ruf headers, exhaust, and and Fabspeed intake and noticed a great increase. Planning on an ECU upgrade soon, just trying to figure who to go with...

have fabspeed maxflo and cold air kit from Evom on my car. No noticeable gain in performance but the car sound better. after some consideration, sent my ecu to evom for tuning. result was disappointing at first. Notice the increase in performance once the tuned ecu had rack up approx 600 miles.
couple of my friends drove the car and they seem to notice the extra kick.

Met with the Upsolute chip US manager yesterday. He indicated that the most you can expect from an NA car is about 20-30 HP. He also said that the easier you make it breathe, the more effective the chip will be. I just had one installed in my turbo and I got an 80-100 HP gain. WOW!!

Can the ECU really be programmed 'generically' the EVO one? I was under the impression that for true performance ECUs needed to be 'hand' tuned to your specific car & it's mods.

If not them I'm adding one to my 01 C2 (GT3 body, Evo Intake, FVD Exhaust). So far the intake added a nice noise over 5k rpm but no noticable performance increase (although the car is a little jumpier in first gear), the exhaust added a wonderfull noise but not sure about the performance.

I've had the Evo Max Flow intake, Fabspeed headers and muffler for 6 months. I wish I would have done a dyno before I had them put on. I'm going to buy the Upsolute chip. I'm going to dyno before and after the chip. It's nice to have the money back guarantee if I don't get a big enough increase in HP. I would think you would have to get a chip to take advantage of the intake, headers and muffler.

Does anyone know what the drivetrain loss would be for a 2001 C2 Tip. I also live in Denver - 5,280 high. Do you also need to correct for this compared to sea level. Thanks.

I would be interested in seeing some dyno results from a 20-30hp increase from a simple ECU reprogramming on a NA car. On a Turbo, it's a completely different beast and the increase is significant. I've noticed a lot of folks plugging their chips by using the Turbo for example.

However, with a NA car, I am hard pressed to believe such aggressive gains as they claim without proof. Everything I have heard and seen is that is changes the powerband only, which naturally is deceiving.

Most folks who see gains also couple it with headers and exhaust. I am really curious about all this and if anyone has anything to the contrary, I'd be interested, most definitely.

I will be very interested to see where all of this ends up. Upsolute claims 22 hp and 30 torque. Fabspeed claims 20 hp and torque for their headers, muffler combo. Evo claims 8 hp and torque for their Maxflow intake. This equals and grand total of 50 hp and 58 torque gain. Hard to believe. I'd be happy with a 30 and 30 gain. The total cost is $2,600 bucks. The dyno will tell all. For $9,000 the Evo S.C. seems like a pretty good deal. I still have a warranty, or I would probably do the S.C.

I wonder if you would get more power from a chipped, with header, exhaust and intake, SC'd car versus a just SC'd car.
I'm planning to SC my car once the warranty runs out. But in the meantime is it worth it to do the other mods?
